How Alaska jails are organized

Each borough in Alaska runs its own jail, and each has its own page here. Anchorage is a municipality, not a Lower 48 county. Fairbanks is the Fairbanks North Star Borough. The Matanuska-Susitna Borough is Palmer and Wasilla, not Anchorage. Juneau, Ketchikan, and Nome are separate lockups with flights, not drives. Juneau is the state capital, but arrests are booked in the borough where they happen.

Alaska mixes municipal jails with Alaska Department of Corrections facilities (Goose Creek, Spring Creek, Hiland, Anchorage Correctional Complex). There is no 67-county sheriff map. A village holding cell is not the Anchorage roster. This site currently has live roster pages for 1 of 30 boroughs and census areas (2 jail pages, 0 records tracked). The other 29 boroughs and census areas have a jail information page with lookup steps and contacts; until a roster feed is connected, the sheriff or detention center is the official source for who is in custody there.

Bond, visits and money in Alaska

Bail follows Alaska Criminal Rule practice. Cash, surety, and third-party custodians appear. A Lower 48 bondsman may not be licensed here. Confirm with the facility that actually holds the person. Bond amounts shown on a roster can change after the first court appearance. CurrentPrisonList does not post bail or accept payments.

Winter weather cancels visits more honestly than Lower 48 jails. Goose Creek is not downtown Anchorage. Video visits are common for remote families. Read that facility’s page, not a generic “Alaska jail” blog. Dress codes, video-visit providers and appointment times are set by each jail. Check the sheriff's website on the day of the visit.

Travel and common mistakes in Alaska

ANC is the hub. Fairbanks is a different airport. Juneau is a flight or a ferry, not a highway from Seattle. The Alaska Marine Highway is not a visiting shuttle. Take the jail address from the sheriff's website or from the contact section of the borough page, not from a generic map search.

A common mistake: treating Alaska like a county-sheriff state, or assuming everyone arrested in Anchorage stays at the Complex. DOC movements are routine. Neighboring states have their own state pages on this site.
