How California jails are organized
Each county in California runs its own jail, and each has its own page here. Los Angeles County is LASD (Twin Towers, Men’s Central, Century, Pitchess), not the LAPD city jail. San Diego County is SDSD. Orange County is Santa Ana’s complex. The Bay Area splits San Francisco, Alameda, Santa Clara, San Mateo, Contra Costa, and Marin — six sheriffs. Sacramento, Fresno, Kern, and Riverside are inland giants with their own rosters. Sacramento is the state capital, but arrests are booked in the county where they happen.
California county jails hold pretrial and local-sentenced people under the sheriff. CDCR (San Quentin, Folsom, Wasco, CIW) is the state prison system — no county-style public booking log. Realignment (AB 109) left many sentenced people in county beds, which is why a “state time” rumor can still be a county roster. This site currently has live roster pages for 7 of 58 counties (7 jail pages, 11,352 records tracked). The other 51 counties have a jail information page with lookup steps and contacts; until a roster feed is connected, the sheriff or detention center is the official source for who is in custody there.
Finding someone in a California jail
Large California sheriffs publish inmate searches with charges. Some smaller mountain and north-coast counties are thinner. SFSO and LASD are different websites. This hub never mixes them. If you know the county, open its roster above and search by name or charge. If you only know the city of arrest, find which county the city is in first.
Superior Court is county-based. LA has dozens of courthouses (Clara Shortridge Foltz, Compton, Van Nuys, Lancaster). A Van Nuys hearing does not mean Pitchess, and a downtown arraignment does not mean Twin Towers forever. The courthouse and the jail are often in different buildings. Confirm the facility name on the booking paperwork or with the attorney before you travel.
Bond, visits and money in California
California bail is in political and statutory flux; counties still post schedules and judges still set amounts. Cash, surety, and own-recognizance releases all appear. A bondsman licensed in one county may not walk another jail’s window. Bond amounts shown on a roster can change after the first court appearance. CurrentPrisonList does not post bail or accept payments.
LASD, SDSD, and OCSD each run their own visit and video systems. Do not copy Twin Towers rules onto Santa Rita (Alameda) or Elmwood (Santa Clara). PREA, dress codes, and appointment windows are facility-specific. Dress codes, video-visit providers and appointment times are set by each jail. Check the sheriff's website on the day of the visit.
Travel and common mistakes in California
LAX, SAN, SJC, SFO, OAK, SMF, FAT, and PSP still leave a freeway last mile. Twin Towers is downtown LA traffic. Santa Rita is Dublin, not Oakland’s downtown. Do not treat a San Diego booking as a Los Angeles visit. Take the jail address from the sheriff's website or from the contact section of the county page, not from a generic map search.
A common mistake: calling CDCR to ask who is in Twin Towers, or driving to Men’s Central because the person was arrested in Long Beach — Long Beach PD and LASD custody are different first nights. Neighboring states have their own state pages on this site.
