How Delaware jails are organized
Each county in Delaware runs its own jail, and each has its own page here. Wilmington is New Castle County. Dover is Kent County. Georgetown and the beaches are Sussex County. That is the entire first-level map — three sheriffs, not fifty. Dover is the state capital, but arrests are booked in the county where they happen.
Delaware mixes county lockups with Department of Correction (Howard R. Young in Wilmington, James T. Vaughn near Smyrna, Sussex Correctional). A “Wilmington jail” search can mean Gander Hill (HRYCI) or a county holding pattern — read the name on the paper. This site currently has live roster pages for 2 of 3 three counties (2 jail pages, 0 records tracked). The other 1 county have a jail information page with lookup steps and contacts; until a roster feed is connected, the sheriff or detention center is the official source for who is in custody there.
Finding someone in a Delaware jail
With only three counties, coverage is either a county page or a DOC facility page. There is no 88-county grid. DOC inmate search is statewide for sentenced and many detained people. If you know the county, open its roster above and search by name or charge. If you only know the city of arrest, find which county the city is in first.
Superior Court and Court of Common Pleas sit by county. New Castle’s Wilmington courts are not Sussex’s Georgetown docket. JP courts handle smaller matters. The courthouse and the jail are often in different buildings. Confirm the facility name on the booking paperwork or with the attorney before you travel.
Bond, visits and money in Delaware
Bond practice is Delaware-specific. Philadelphia bondsmen are another state. Post where the court and facility tell you, not at a Pennsylvania window. Bond amounts shown on a roster can change after the first court appearance. CurrentPrisonList does not post bail or accept payments.
Vaughn is a Smyrna-area drive from Wilmington, not downtown. Sussex CI is Georgetown-area. Do not copy a Pennsylvania county visit sheet. Dress codes, video-visit providers and appointment times are set by each jail. Check the sheriff's website on the day of the visit.
Travel and common mistakes in Delaware
PHL is the practical airport for New Castle and still a Pennsylvania landing. Dover is a capital drive. Beaches in summer crush Sussex roads on visit days. Take the jail address from the sheriff's website or from the contact section of the county page, not from a generic map search.
A common mistake: treating Delaware as a suburb of Philadelphia’s jail system, or confusing Howard R. Young with a New Castle County-only sheriff roster. Neighboring states have their own state pages on this site.
