How Iowa jails are organized
Each county in Iowa runs its own jail, and each has its own page here. Des Moines is Polk County. Cedar Rapids is Linn. Davenport is Scott, on the Mississippi opposite Illinois. Iowa City is Johnson. Sioux City is Woodbury. Waterloo is Black Hawk. Council Bluffs is Pottawattamie, across from Omaha. Des Moines is the state capital, but arrests are booked in the county where they happen.
Sheriffs run county jails. Some small counties board inmates with a neighbor. IDOC (Anamosa, Fort Dodge, Newton) is prison. A city lockup is overnight. This site currently has live roster pages for 8 of 99 counties (8 jail pages, 5,181 records tracked). The other 91 counties have a jail information page with lookup steps and contacts; until a roster feed is connected, the sheriff or detention center is the official source for who is in custody there.
Finding someone in an Iowa jail
Iowa counties often use shared vendor portals, but each sheriff’s list is still that county. There is no single statewide jail roster. If you know the county, open its roster above and search by name or charge. If you only know the city of arrest, find which county the city is in first.
District court is statewide in structure but sits locally. Polk’s Des Moines courts are not Linn’s Cedar Rapids docket. Magistrate court handles smaller matters. The courthouse and the jail are often in different buildings. Confirm the facility name on the booking paperwork or with the attorney before you travel.
Bond, visits and money in Iowa
Bond schedules appear in busier counties. Nebraska bondsmen in Omaha do not automatically cover Pottawattamie. Post in Iowa for an Iowa hold. Bond amounts shown on a roster can change after the first court appearance. CurrentPrisonList does not post bail or accept payments.
Polk County’s jail is not the State Capitol tour. Quad Cities families mix Illinois and Iowa jails — Scott County is Iowa. Video visits are common in winter. Dress codes, video-visit providers and appointment times are set by each jail. Check the sheriff's website on the day of the visit.
Travel and common mistakes in Iowa
DSM for Polk. CID for eastern Iowa. MLI (Moline, Illinois) for the Quad Cities. OMA for Council Bluffs. The river is a state line. Take the jail address from the sheriff's website or from the contact section of the county page, not from a generic map search.
A common mistake: driving to an Illinois jail in Rock Island for a Davenport case, or calling IDOC about a county booking. Neighboring states have their own state pages on this site.
