How Illinois jails are organized
Each county in Illinois runs its own jail, and each has its own page here. Chicago is Cook County — Cook County Jail is its own city of a facility. The collar counties are Lake, McHenry, Kane, DuPage, Will, and Kendall, each with a sheriff roster. Rockford is Winnebago. Peoria is Peoria County. Springfield is Sangamon. Metro East (St. Clair, Madison) looks at St. Louis and books in Illinois. Springfield is the state capital, but arrests are booked in the county where they happen.
County sheriffs run jails. IDOC is the state prison system (Stateville, Logan, Menard). Chicago PD lockups are not the Cook County Jail roster. Bond-out from a district station is a different first night. This site currently has live roster pages for 9 of 102 counties (9 jail pages, 23,614 records tracked). The other 93 counties have a jail information page with lookup steps and contacts; until a roster feed is connected, the sheriff or detention center is the official source for who is in custody there.
Finding someone in an Illinois jail
Cook and the collar counties publish inmate information. Downstate quality varies. There is no single Illinois jail roster. St. Clair is not Cook. If you know the county, open its roster above and search by name or charge. If you only know the city of arrest, find which county the city is in first.
Circuit courts are grouped. Cook County Circuit Court is enormous (26th and California is not the only building). DuPage’s Wheaton courts are a different county. Municipal courts in Chicago handle city code, not CCSO visits. The courthouse and the jail are often in different buildings. Confirm the facility name on the booking paperwork or with the attorney before you travel.
Bond, visits and money in Illinois
Illinois has changed money-bail practice (SAFE-T Act / Pretrial Fairness). County jails still hold people on detainers, warrants, and other holds. Do not copy a 2019 bond-blog onto a Cook County page. Bond amounts shown on a roster can change after the first court appearance. CurrentPrisonList does not post bail or accept payments.
Cook County Jail visit rules are not DuPage’s. Video vendors differ. Winter and CTA timing are Chicago facts; I-88 is a DuPage fact. Dress codes, video-visit providers and appointment times are set by each jail. Check the sheriff's website on the day of the visit.
Travel and common mistakes in Illinois
ORD and MDW serve Cook and the collars. RFD for Rockford. STL is a Missouri airport that still dumps Metro East families into Illinois counties. 26th and California is not O’Hare. Take the jail address from the sheriff's website or from the contact section of the county page, not from a generic map search.
A common mistake: searching “Chicago inmate” and landing a DuPage or Lake County booking, or calling IDOC about Cook County Jail. Neighboring states have their own state pages on this site.
