How Indiana jails are organized
Each county in Indiana runs its own jail, and each has its own page here. Indianapolis is Marion County. The donut is Hamilton (Carmel, Fishers), Hendricks, Johnson, Hancock, Boone, and Morgan — each a sheriff. Gary and Hammond are Lake County. Fort Wayne is Allen. South Bend is St. Joseph. Evansville is Vanderburgh. Bloomington is Monroe. Indianapolis is the state capital, but arrests are booked in the county where they happen.
County sheriffs run jails. IDOC (Reception Diagnostic Center, Pendleton, Putnamville) is prison. Indianapolis Metropolitan lockups are not the Marion County Jail roster until the county books the person. This site currently has live roster pages for 21 of 92 counties (21 jail pages, 3,839 records tracked). The other 71 counties have a jail information page with lookup steps and contacts; until a roster feed is connected, the sheriff or detention center is the official source for who is in custody there.
Finding someone in an Indiana jail
Many Indiana counties use vendor inmate lists. Lake and Marion are high-volume. Rural counties may update slowly. There is no single statewide jail roster. If you know the county, open its roster above and search by name or charge. If you only know the city of arrest, find which county the city is in first.
Circuit and superior courts sit in the county. Marion’s City-County Building is not Hamilton County’s Noblesville courts. Town courts exist in some places for ordinances. The courthouse and the jail are often in different buildings. Confirm the facility name on the booking paperwork or with the attorney before you travel.
Bond, visits and money in Indiana
Indiana cash and surety bonds are common. A Lake County (Indiana) bondsman is not Cook County, Illinois. County jail windows follow local sheriff rules. Bond amounts shown on a roster can change after the first court appearance. CurrentPrisonList does not post bail or accept payments.
Marion County’s complex is not a Hamilton County visit. Lake County visits are a Chicago-adjacent drive with Indiana rules. Video vendors vary. Dress codes, video-visit providers and appointment times are set by each jail. Check the sheriff's website on the day of the visit.
Travel and common mistakes in Indiana
IND for Marion and the donut. SBN for St. Joseph. FWA for Allen. Chicago airports look close to Lake County and still leave an Illinois/Indiana line. Take the jail address from the sheriff's website or from the contact section of the county page, not from a generic map search.
A common mistake: treating the Indy donut as one jail, or mixing Lake County, Indiana with Lake County, Illinois. Neighboring states have their own state pages on this site.
