How Kansas jails are organized
Each county in Kansas runs its own jail, and each has its own page here. Wichita is Sedgwick County. Johnson County is the Kansas City, Kansas suburbs (Overland Park, Olathe) — not Jackson County, Missouri. Kansas City, Kansas is Wyandotte. Topeka is Shawnee. Lawrence is Douglas. These four are different sheriffs in one metro conversation. Topeka is the state capital, but arrests are booked in the county where they happen.
County sheriffs run jails. KDOC (El Dorado, Lansing, Topeka Correctional) is prison. Unified Government lockups in Wyandotte are still not Johnson County. This site currently has live roster pages for 7 of 105 counties (7 jail pages, 399 records tracked). The other 98 counties have a jail information page with lookup steps and contacts; until a roster feed is connected, the sheriff or detention center is the official source for who is in custody there.
Finding someone in a Kansas jail
Johnson, Sedgwick, and other large counties publish inmate searches. Western Kansas counties may be small HTML or phone lists. No statewide county merge. If you know the county, open its roster above and search by name or charge. If you only know the city of arrest, find which county the city is in first.
District courts sit by county. Johnson County’s Olathe courts are not Wyandotte’s Kansas City, Kansas courts, and neither is Jackson County, Missouri. The courthouse and the jail are often in different buildings. Confirm the facility name on the booking paperwork or with the attorney before you travel.
Bond, visits and money in Kansas
A Missouri bondsman in Kansas City, Missouri may not post a Johnson County, Kansas bond. Know which state holds the person. Bond amounts shown on a roster can change after the first court appearance. CurrentPrisonList does not post bail or accept payments.
Johnson vs Wyandotte is a classic mix-up. Sedgwick is a Wichita drive, not KC. Lansing Correctional is KDOC, not the county jail. Dress codes, video-visit providers and appointment times are set by each jail. Check the sheriff's website on the day of the visit.
Travel and common mistakes in Kansas
ICT for Wichita. MCI (Kansas City International) sits in Missouri and serves both Kansas and Missouri counties — check the roster’s state. FOE for Topeka. Take the jail address from the sheriff's website or from the contact section of the county page, not from a generic map search.
A common mistake: mixing Johnson County, Kansas with Jackson County, Missouri, or treating KCK and Overland Park as one jail. Neighboring states have their own state pages on this site.
