How Massachusetts jails are organized
Each county in Massachusetts runs its own jail, and each has its own page here. Boston is Suffolk County (Nashua Street, South Bay). Cambridge and Lowell sit in Middlesex. Worcester is Worcester County. Springfield is Hampden. New Bedford and Fall River are Bristol. Lawrence and Newburyport sit in Essex. These are Houses of Correction and jails under elected sheriffs, not a single Boston roster. Boston is the state capital, but arrests are booked in the county where they happen.
Massachusetts sheriffs run county jails and houses of correction (sentenced county time). DOC (Shirley, Norfolk, MCI-Cedar Junction history) is state prison. BPD holding is not the Suffolk roster. This site currently has live roster pages for 2 of 14 counties (sheriff-run houses of correction) (2 jail pages, 0 records tracked). The other 12 counties (sheriff-run houses of correction) have a jail information page with lookup steps and contacts; until a roster feed is connected, the sheriff or detention center is the official source for who is in custody there.
Finding someone in a Massachusetts jail
Sheriff inmate lists exist for many counties. Suffolk is not Middlesex. There is no 351-town booking log — towns do not each run a jail roster. If you know the county, open its roster above and search by name or charge. If you only know the city of arrest, find which county the city is in first.
Superior and district courts sit by county. Boston Municipal Court is a Suffolk story. A Cambridge District Court case can still mean a Middlesex sheriff facility, not Nashua Street. The courthouse and the jail are often in different buildings. Confirm the facility name on the booking paperwork or with the attorney before you travel.
Bond, visits and money in Massachusetts
Bail commissioners and judges set terms. A New Hampshire bondsman does not cover Essex automatically. Suffolk’s volume has its own window culture. Bond amounts shown on a roster can change after the first court appearance. CurrentPrisonList does not post bail or accept payments.
South Bay is not Nashua Street. Middleton (Essex) is not Boston. Video visits are widely used. Do not copy a Rhode Island ACI rule onto a Massachusetts HOC. Dress codes, video-visit providers and appointment times are set by each jail. Check the sheriff's website on the day of the visit.
Travel and common mistakes in Massachusetts
BOS for Suffolk and much of the east. ORH for Worcester. BDL can be closer to Springfield (Hampden) than Logan. I-90 does not merge Hampden with Suffolk. Take the jail address from the sheriff's website or from the contact section of the county page, not from a generic map search.
A common mistake: calling it “Boston jail” when the person is in Middleton, Billerica, or Ludlow, or mixing county HOC time with DOC state prison. Neighboring states have their own state pages on this site.
