How Maryland jails are organized

Each county or Baltimore City in Maryland runs its own jail, and each has its own page here. Baltimore City is its own jurisdiction with a jail system that is not Baltimore County (Towson). Montgomery (Rockville) and Prince George’s (Upper Marlboro) are the DC-suburb giants. Anne Arundel is Annapolis. Howard is Ellicott City. Frederick, Harford, and Charles complete the I-95 / DC story with different sheriffs. Annapolis is the state capital, but arrests are booked in the county or Baltimore City where they happen.

County detention centers are sheriff- or county-run. Baltimore City’s jail complex has a distinct history and current DOC/city arrangements — read the facility name. Maryland DPSCS runs state prisons (Jessup, Cumberland). This site currently has live roster pages for 4 of 24 counties plus Baltimore City (3 jail pages, 2,906 records tracked). The other 20 counties plus Baltimore City have a jail information page with lookup steps and contacts; until a roster feed is connected, the sheriff or detention center is the official source for who is in custody there.

Bond, visits and money in Maryland

Maryland has restricted money bail; pretrial units matter. DC’s system does not apply in PG or Montgomery. Confirm with the detention center that holds the person. Bond amounts shown on a roster can change after the first court appearance. CurrentPrisonList does not post bail or accept payments.

Upper Marlboro is not Rockville. Baltimore County Detention is not the City jail. Jessup complexes mix county and state geography — match the name. Dress codes, video-visit providers and appointment times are set by each jail. Check the sheriff's website on the day of the visit.

Travel and common mistakes in Maryland

BWI serves Anne Arundel and the whole metro. DCA and IAD dump DC-suburb families into Maryland counties after a Virginia or District landing. I-495 does not unify the jails. Take the jail address from the sheriff's website or from the contact section of the county or Baltimore City page, not from a generic map search.

A common mistake: searching Baltimore County for a City booking, or treating a Prince George’s arrest as a DC Jail case. Neighboring states have their own state pages on this site.
