How Maine jails are organized
Each county in Maine runs its own jail, and each has its own page here. Portland is Cumberland County. Bangor is Penobscot. Lewiston-Auburn is Androscoggin. Augusta is Kennebec. York County is the southern border with New Hampshire (Biddeford, Sanford). Aroostook is the huge north. These are county jails, not towns with their own rosters. Augusta is the state capital, but arrests are booked in the county where they happen.
Maine county jails are sheriff-run; some hold regional contracts. Maine DOC (Warren, Windham) is prison. Portland Police holding is not the Cumberland County Jail roster. This site currently has live roster pages for 4 of 16 counties (4 jail pages, 196 records tracked). The other 12 counties have a jail information page with lookup steps and contacts; until a roster feed is connected, the sheriff or detention center is the official source for who is in custody there.
Finding someone in a Maine jail
Sixteen counties make a small grid. Several publish inmate lists. Northern and downeast counties may be phone-first. There is no single statewide jail roster. If you know the county, open its roster above and search by name or charge. If you only know the city of arrest, find which county the city is in first.
Unified Criminal Docket sits in the county. Cumberland’s Portland courts are not York’s. A New Hampshire arrest in Portsmouth is another state. The courthouse and the jail are often in different buildings. Confirm the facility name on the booking paperwork or with the attorney before you travel.
Bond, visits and money in Maine
Maine bail commissioners can set conditions after hours. New Hampshire bondsmen do not cover York County automatically. Cash and unsecured bonds both appear. Bond amounts shown on a roster can change after the first court appearance. CurrentPrisonList does not post bail or accept payments.
Cumberland’s jail is not Old Port tourism. Winter and distance in Aroostook are the visit. Video is common for families in Boston. Dress codes, video-visit providers and appointment times are set by each jail. Check the sheriff's website on the day of the visit.
Travel and common mistakes in Maine
PWM for Cumberland and York. BGR for Penobscot. Boston’s Logan looks close to York County and is still a Massachusetts landing. I-95 is not a jail shuttle. Take the jail address from the sheriff's website or from the contact section of the county page, not from a generic map search.
A common mistake: mixing York County, Maine with York County, Pennsylvania or South Carolina, or treating a Massachusetts house of correction as a Maine county jail. Neighboring states have their own state pages on this site.
