How Minnesota jails are organized
Each county in Minnesota runs its own jail, and each has its own page here. Minneapolis is Hennepin County. Saint Paul is Ramsey County — two downtowns, two jails. The south and west suburbs are Dakota, Anoka, Washington, and Scott. Duluth is St. Louis County (not Missouri). Rochester is Olmsted. St. Cloud is Stearns. Saint Paul is the state capital, but arrests are booked in the county where they happen.
Sheriffs run county jails. Minnesota DOC (Stillwater, St. Cloud, Shakopee women’s) is prison. Minneapolis city holding is not the Hennepin roster. This site currently has live roster pages for 14 of 87 counties (14 jail pages, 6,050 records tracked). The other 73 counties have a jail information page with lookup steps and contacts; until a roster feed is connected, the sheriff or detention center is the official source for who is in custody there.
Finding someone in a Minnesota jail
Hennepin and Ramsey publish inmate searches. Greater Minnesota varies. There is no single statewide jail roster. St. Louis County, Minnesota is not St. Louis, Missouri. If you know the county, open its roster above and search by name or charge. If you only know the city of arrest, find which county the city is in first.
District court is statewide with county venues. Hennepin’s Minneapolis courts are not Ramsey’s. A Bloomington case is still Hennepin. The courthouse and the jail are often in different buildings. Confirm the facility name on the booking paperwork or with the attorney before you travel.
Bond, visits and money in Minnesota
Minnesota uses a statewide court information culture; local jails still take the bond. Wisconsin bondsmen do not cover Washington County, Minnesota automatically. Bond amounts shown on a roster can change after the first court appearance. CurrentPrisonList does not post bail or accept payments.
Hennepin County Jail is downtown Minneapolis, not Ramsey. Anoka is a separate north-metro door. Winter is a visit-planning fact. Dress codes, video-visit providers and appointment times are set by each jail. Check the sheriff's website on the day of the visit.
Travel and common mistakes in Minnesota
MSP serves both Twin Cities counties and still leaves a river crossing. DLH for Duluth. RST for Rochester. Do not treat a Wisconsin booking in Superior as St. Louis County, Minnesota. Take the jail address from the sheriff's website or from the contact section of the county page, not from a generic map search.
A common mistake: mixing Hennepin and Ramsey because both are “the Cities,” or searching Missouri for St. Louis County, Minnesota. Neighboring states have their own state pages on this site.
