How Montana jails are organized
Each county in Montana runs its own jail, and each has its own page here. Billings is Yellowstone County. Missoula is Missoula County. Bozeman is Gallatin. Great Falls is Cascade. Helena is Lewis and Clark. Kalispell is Flathead. Those six are the search volume; the rest of the map is long gravel and small jails. Helena is the state capital, but arrests are booked in the county where they happen.
Sheriffs run county jails. Montana DOC (Montana State Prison at Deer Lodge, women’s at Billings) is prison. Tribal detention on reservations is a separate sovereign system we do not smear into the county roster. This site currently has live roster pages for 3 of 56 counties (3 jail pages, 105 records tracked). The other 53 counties have a jail information page with lookup steps and contacts; until a roster feed is connected, the sheriff or detention center is the official source for who is in custody there.
Finding someone in a Montana jail
Larger counties publish lists. Many eastern counties are small. There is no single statewide jail roster. Tribal and county custody can both exist in the same geography — read the paper. If you know the county, open its roster above and search by name or charge. If you only know the city of arrest, find which county the city is in first.
District courts sit in judicial districts. Yellowstone’s Billings courts are not Gallatin’s. Justice courts handle smaller matters in the county. The courthouse and the jail are often in different buildings. Confirm the facility name on the booking paperwork or with the attorney before you travel.
Bond, visits and money in Montana
Bond options follow Montana practice. A Wyoming bondsman does not automatically cover Yellowstone. Distances mean wire and professional bondsmen matter more than walking in. Bond amounts shown on a roster can change after the first court appearance. CurrentPrisonList does not post bail or accept payments.
Billings is not Bozeman. Winter passes close. Video visits are how eastern Montana families actually see people. Deer Lodge is DOC, not the county jail. Dress codes, video-visit providers and appointment times are set by each jail. Check the sheriff's website on the day of the visit.
Travel and common mistakes in Montana
BIL, MSO, BZN, GTN, and FCA are different counties after you land. Driving I-90 looks simple and eats a visit slot between Billings and Missoula. Take the jail address from the sheriff's website or from the contact section of the county page, not from a generic map search.
A common mistake: treating tribal detention as the county sheriff’s roster, or driving to Montana State Prison for a county booking. Neighboring states have their own state pages on this site.
