How North Carolina jails are organized
Each county in North Carolina runs its own jail, and each has its own page here. Charlotte is Mecklenburg. Raleigh is Wake. Durham is Durham County, not Wake. Greensboro is Guilford. Winston-Salem is Forsyth. Fayetteville is Cumberland. Wilmington is New Hanover. Asheville is Buncombe. Those eight sheriffs are not one Carolina roster. Raleigh is the state capital, but arrests are booked in the county where they happen.
County jails are sheriff-run. NCDAC (the state prison system, formerly DPS) is not a county booking log. A CMPD lockup overnight is not the Mecklenburg roster until the sheriff books them. This site currently has live roster pages for 6 of 100 counties (6 jail pages, 783 records tracked). The other 94 counties have a jail information page with lookup steps and contacts; until a roster feed is connected, the sheriff or detention center is the official source for who is in custody there.
Finding someone in a North Carolina jail
Large North Carolina counties publish inmate searches with charges. Rural counties vary. 100 counties means this grid is large. No statewide sheriff merge. If you know the county, open its roster above and search by name or charge. If you only know the city of arrest, find which county the city is in first.
Superior and district courts sit in the county. Wake’s Raleigh courts are not Durham’s. Magistrates handle initial appearance statewide in structure, locally in person. The courthouse and the jail are often in different buildings. Confirm the facility name on the booking paperwork or with the attorney before you travel.
Bond, visits and money in North Carolina
Magistrates often set conditions quickly. Bondsmen work county lists. A South Carolina bondsman in York County does not cover Mecklenburg automatically. Bond amounts shown on a roster can change after the first court appearance. CurrentPrisonList does not post bail or accept payments.
Mecklenburg’s jail is not Wake. Durham and Wake are adjacent and different doors. Mountain winter in Buncombe is a visit fact. Video vendors vary. Dress codes, video-visit providers and appointment times are set by each jail. Check the sheriff's website on the day of the visit.
Travel and common mistakes in North Carolina
CLT for Mecklenburg. RDU for Wake and Durham (still two counties). GSO for Guilford. ILM for New Hanover. AVL for Buncombe. I-40 does not merge them. Take the jail address from the sheriff's website or from the contact section of the county page, not from a generic map search.
A common mistake: treating the Research Triangle as one jail, or mixing a South Carolina booking in York County with Mecklenburg. Neighboring states have their own state pages on this site.
