How North Dakota jails are organized
Each county in North Dakota runs its own jail, and each has its own page here. Fargo is Cass County. Bismarck is Burleigh. Grand Forks is Grand Forks County. Minot is Ward. Williston is Williams. Those five are the search volume in a huge map of small jails. Bismarck is the state capital, but arrests are booked in the county where they happen.
Sheriffs run county jails. ND DOCR (the state penitentiary in Bismarck, James River) is prison. Moorhead, Minnesota is Clay County, Minnesota — not Cass. This site currently has live roster pages for 3 of 53 counties (3 jail pages, 484 records tracked). The other 50 counties have a jail information page with lookup steps and contacts; until a roster feed is connected, the sheriff or detention center is the official source for who is in custody there.
Finding someone in a North Dakota jail
Cass and Burleigh are more likely to have public lists. Oil-patch counties can have volatile populations and thinner websites. No statewide merge. If you know the county, open its roster above and search by name or charge. If you only know the city of arrest, find which county the city is in first.
District court sits in the county. Cass County’s Fargo courts are not Clay County, Minnesota. A Grand Forks, North Dakota case is not East Grand Forks, Minnesota. The courthouse and the jail are often in different buildings. Confirm the facility name on the booking paperwork or with the attorney before you travel.
Bond, visits and money in North Dakota
Minnesota bondsmen in Moorhead do not automatically cover Cass. Post in North Dakota for a North Dakota hold. Distances favor professional bondsmen. Bond amounts shown on a roster can change after the first court appearance. CurrentPrisonList does not post bail or accept payments.
The Red River is a state line. Fargo’s jail is not Moorhead’s. Bismarck’s county jail is not the state penitentiary next door in the same city conversation. Dress codes, video-visit providers and appointment times are set by each jail. Check the sheriff's website on the day of the visit.
Travel and common mistakes in North Dakota
FAR for Cass. BIS for Burleigh. GFK, MOT, and ISN for the other metros. Minneapolis looks close on a national map and is a different day. Take the jail address from the sheriff's website or from the contact section of the county page, not from a generic map search.
A common mistake: mixing Fargo with Moorhead, Minnesota, or walking to the state penitentiary for a Cass County booking. Neighboring states have their own state pages on this site.
