How New Hampshire jails are organized
Each county in New Hampshire runs its own jail, and each has its own page here. Manchester and Nashua are Hillsborough County — the population core. The Seacoast is Rockingham (Brentwood, Portsmouth area). Concord is Merrimack. Dover-Rochester is Strafford. The North Country is Coos. Those are county houses of correction, not town jails. Concord is the state capital, but arrests are booked in the county where they happen.
New Hampshire county departments of corrections run the jails. NHDOC (Concord, Berlin) is state prison. A town lockup is overnight only. This site currently has live roster pages for 2 of 10 counties (2 jail pages, 268 records tracked). The other 8 counties have a jail information page with lookup steps and contacts; until a roster feed is connected, the sheriff or detention center is the official source for who is in custody there.
Finding someone in a New Hampshire jail
Ten counties make a small, complete-looking grid. Inmate lists exist for the large southern counties. There is no 234-town roster map. If you know the county, open its roster above and search by name or charge. If you only know the city of arrest, find which county the city is in first.
Superior Court is the felony trial court by county. Circuit Court handles many misdemeanors. Hillsborough has northern and southern distinctions families mix up — read the location on the notice. The courthouse and the jail are often in different buildings. Confirm the facility name on the booking paperwork or with the attorney before you travel.
Bond, visits and money in New Hampshire
Bail commissioners can set terms after hours. Massachusetts bondsmen do not automatically cover Hillsborough. Cash and personal recognizance both appear. Bond amounts shown on a roster can change after the first court appearance. CurrentPrisonList does not post bail or accept payments.
The Hillsborough County jail is not Manchester City Hall. Rockingham’s Brentwood facility is not Portsmouth tourism. Winter I-93 is a North Country fact. Dress codes, video-visit providers and appointment times are set by each jail. Check the sheriff's website on the day of the visit.
Travel and common mistakes in New Hampshire
MHT for Hillsborough and Merrimack. BOS looks close to Rockingham. PWM can be closer to Strafford. Maine’s York County is another state. Take the jail address from the sheriff's website or from the contact section of the county page, not from a generic map search.
A common mistake: treating every southern New Hampshire arrest as Manchester’s jail, or mixing a Massachusetts house of correction with Hillsborough County. Neighboring states have their own state pages on this site.
