How New Jersey jails are organized
Each county in New Jersey runs its own jail, and each has its own page here. Newark is Essex. Jersey City is Hudson. Hackensack / the suburbs are Bergen. Paterson is Passaic. New Brunswick is Middlesex. Camden is Camden County, opposite Philadelphia. Trenton is Mercer. Atlantic City is Atlantic. Each county jail is a different sheriff. Trenton is the state capital, but arrests are booked in the county where they happen.
New Jersey county jails are sheriff-run. NJDOC (Garden State, Edna Mahan, South Woods) is prison. A municipal lockup in Newark is not Essex County Correctional. This site currently has live roster pages for 3 of 21 counties (3 jail pages, 0 records tracked). The other 18 counties have a jail information page with lookup steps and contacts; until a roster feed is connected, the sheriff or detention center is the official source for who is in custody there.
Finding someone in a New Jersey jail
Large North Jersey counties publish inmate searches. There is no statewide county merge. NYC DOC is another state. If you know the county, open its roster above and search by name or charge. If you only know the city of arrest, find which county the city is in first.
Superior Court sits in the county vicinage. Essex Vicinage is not Hudson. A municipal court in a Bergen borough is not the county jail visit desk. The courthouse and the jail are often in different buildings. Confirm the facility name on the booking paperwork or with the attorney before you travel.
Bond, visits and money in New Jersey
New Jersey’s criminal justice reform reduced money bail; pretrial services and detention hearings matter more than a Texas-style bondsman window. County jails still hold people. Do not copy a 2015 bail blog. Bond amounts shown on a roster can change after the first court appearance. CurrentPrisonList does not post bail or accept payments.
Essex County Correctional (including the Newark complex) is not Hudson County’s Kearny-area jail. Camden visits are a Philadelphia-adjacent drive with New Jersey rules. Dress codes, video-visit providers and appointment times are set by each jail. Check the sheriff's website on the day of the visit.
Travel and common mistakes in New Jersey
EWR sits in Essex/Union geography. LGA and JFK are New York. PHL serves Camden County families. PATH trains do not create a New York visit permit. Take the jail address from the sheriff's website or from the contact section of the county page, not from a generic map search.
A common mistake: searching NYC DOC for a Hudson or Essex booking, or treating Union, Essex, and Hudson as one Newark jail. Neighboring states have their own state pages on this site.
