How New Mexico jails are organized

Each county in New Mexico runs its own jail, and each has its own page here. Albuquerque is Bernalillo County. Rio Rancho is Sandoval. Santa Fe is Santa Fe County — the capital is not Albuquerque’s jail. Las Cruces is Doña Ana. Farmington is San Juan. These five are different sheriffs. Tribal detention is separate. Santa Fe is the state capital, but arrests are booked in the county where they happen.

County detention centers are sheriff- or county-run. NMCD (Central New Mexico, Penitentiary of New Mexico) is prison. APD holding is not the MDC roster. This site currently has live roster pages for 2 of 33 counties (2 jail pages, 630 records tracked). The other 31 counties have a jail information page with lookup steps and contacts; until a roster feed is connected, the sheriff or detention center is the official source for who is in custody there.

Bond, visits and money in New Mexico

New Mexico has reformed money bail; judges still set conditions. Texas bondsmen in El Paso do not automatically cover Doña Ana. Read the detention center’s posting rules. Bond amounts shown on a roster can change after the first court appearance. CurrentPrisonList does not post bail or accept payments.

MDC is on Albuquerque’s west side, not Santa Fe. Doña Ana is a Las Cruces / El Paso logistics problem. Video is common for out-of-state families. Dress codes, video-visit providers and appointment times are set by each jail. Check the sheriff's website on the day of the visit.

Travel and common mistakes in New Mexico

ABQ for Bernalillo. SAF for Santa Fe. ELP is a Texas airport that serves Doña Ana families — the roster may still be New Mexico. I-25 does not merge the jails. Take the jail address from the sheriff's website or from the contact section of the county page, not from a generic map search.

A common mistake: driving to the penitentiary in Santa Fe County for an MDC booking, or treating an El Paso, Texas jail as Las Cruces. Neighboring states have their own state pages on this site.
