How Ohio jails are organized
Each county in Ohio runs its own jail, and each has its own page here. Columbus is Franklin County. Cleveland is Cuyahoga. Cincinnati is Hamilton. Toledo is Lucas. Akron is Summit. Dayton is Montgomery. Youngstown is Mahoning. Licking County (Newark) is the adjacent east-central county people mix with Franklin. Each has a sheriff roster of its own. Columbus is the state capital, but arrests are booked in the county where they happen.
Ohio county jails are sheriff-run. ODRC (Ohio State Penitentiary, Pickaway, Dayton Correctional) is prison. City lockups are overnight. This site’s Ohio pages are county booking logs, not ODRC inmate search. This site currently has live roster pages for 13 of 88 counties (13 jail pages, 2,312 records tracked). The other 75 counties have a jail information page with lookup steps and contacts; until a roster feed is connected, the sheriff or detention center is the official source for who is in custody there.
Finding someone in an Ohio jail
Many Ohio sheriffs publish rich HTML or vendor rosters (charges, class, bond). That is the product families expect here. Coverage is still county-by-county — Cuyahoga is not Franklin. If you know the county, open its roster above and search by name or charge. If you only know the city of arrest, find which county the city is in first.
Common Pleas is the felony court in the county. Municipal courts (Franklin County Municipal, Cleveland Municipal) handle misdemeanors. A Reynoldsburg case can still be Franklin, Licking, or Fairfield depending on the line — read the roster’s county. The courthouse and the jail are often in different buildings. Confirm the facility name on the booking paperwork or with the attorney before you travel.
Bond, visits and money in Ohio
Ohio uses 10% and surety practice in many counties. A Hamilton County, Ohio bondsman is not Kenton County, Kentucky. Bond on the roster can change after arraignment. Bond amounts shown on a roster can change after the first court appearance. CurrentPrisonList does not post bail or accept payments.
Franklin County’s downtown complex is not Licking County. Cuyahoga’s jail is not Summit. Kentucky and Indiana borders around Cincinnati do not open Hamilton County visits with out-of-state papers. Dress codes, video-visit providers and appointment times are set by each jail. Check the sheriff's website on the day of the visit.
Travel and common mistakes in Ohio
CMH for Franklin. CLE for Cuyahoga. CVG sits in Kentucky and serves Hamilton County, Ohio — still an Ohio roster if the booking is Hamilton. DAY, TOL, CAK for other metros. Take the jail address from the sheriff's website or from the contact section of the county page, not from a generic map search.
A common mistake: driving to the county that matches the TV market instead of the roster, or calling ODRC about a sheriff’s jail. Neighboring states have their own state pages on this site.
