How South Carolina jails are organized
Each county in South Carolina runs its own jail, and each has its own page here. Columbia is Richland County (Lexington County is the west-metro sheriff). Charleston is Charleston County. Greenville is Greenville County. Myrtle Beach is Horry. Rock Hill is York — looking at Charlotte, North Carolina. Spartanburg and Anderson complete the Upstate split. Columbia is the state capital, but arrests are booked in the county where they happen.
County detention centers are sheriff-run. SCDC (Kirkland, Lieber, Camille Griffin Graham) is prison. A North Charleston city lockup is not Charleston County’s roster until booked. This site currently has live roster pages for 9 of 46 counties (9 jail pages, 1,860 records tracked). The other 37 counties have a jail information page with lookup steps and contacts; until a roster feed is connected, the sheriff or detention center is the official source for who is in custody there.
Finding someone in a South Carolina jail
Large counties publish inmate searches. York County, South Carolina is not Mecklenburg, North Carolina. No statewide sheriff merge. If you know the county, open its roster above and search by name or charge. If you only know the city of arrest, find which county the city is in first.
Circuit and magistrate courts sit in the county. Richland’s Columbia courts are not Lexington’s. A Rock Hill case is York County, not Charlotte’s Mecklenburg. The courthouse and the jail are often in different buildings. Confirm the facility name on the booking paperwork or with the attorney before you travel.
Bond, visits and money in South Carolina
South Carolina surety bondsmen work county lists. A North Carolina bondsman does not cover York automatically. First appearance follows magistrate practice. Bond amounts shown on a roster can change after the first court appearance. CurrentPrisonList does not post bail or accept payments.
Richland and Lexington are a river apart and different doors. Horry’s jail is not a beach hotel. SCDC Kirkland is not the county detention center. Dress codes, video-visit providers and appointment times are set by each jail. Check the sheriff's website on the day of the visit.
Travel and common mistakes in South Carolina
CAE for Richland/Lexington. CHS for Charleston. GSP for Greenville. MYR for Horry. CLT is a North Carolina airport that serves York County families — check the state on the roster. Take the jail address from the sheriff's website or from the contact section of the county page, not from a generic map search.
