How South Dakota jails are organized

Each county in South Dakota runs its own jail, and each has its own page here. Sioux Falls is Minnehaha County. Rapid City is Pennington. Aberdeen is Brown. Those three are the search volume. Pine Ridge and other reservation communities may involve tribal detention that is not the county sheriff’s list. Pierre is the state capital, but arrests are booked in the county where they happen.

Sheriffs run county jails. SD DOC (State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls, women’s in Pierre) is prison. Tribal detention is a separate sovereign. A city lockup is overnight. This site currently has live roster pages for 4 of 66 counties (4 jail pages, 199 records tracked). The other 62 counties have a jail information page with lookup steps and contacts; until a roster feed is connected, the sheriff or detention center is the official source for who is in custody there.

Bond, visits and money in South Dakota

Bond practice is local. A Minnehaha bondsman is not Pennington. Distances on I-90 make wires more useful than walking a window from the other side of the state. Bond amounts shown on a roster can change after the first court appearance. CurrentPrisonList does not post bail or accept payments.

The county jail in Sioux Falls is not the state penitentiary in the same city conversation. Rapid City is a Black Hills drive, not a Sioux Falls suburb. Winter is the plan. Dress codes, video-visit providers and appointment times are set by each jail. Check the sheriff's website on the day of the visit.

Travel and common mistakes in South Dakota

FSD for Minnehaha. RAP for Pennington. Pierre is a capital flight. Minneapolis looks close nationally and is a different day. Take the jail address from the sheriff's website or from the contact section of the county page, not from a generic map search.

A common mistake: mixing tribal detention with the county roster, or walking to the state penitentiary for a Minnehaha County booking. Neighboring states have their own state pages on this site.

Frequently asked questions

Is there one South Dakota inmate search for the whole state?
No. Public booking logs are county-level in South Dakota. Minnehaha publishes inmate information. Use the county list on this page.
Does a South Dakota county jail roster include state prison inmates?
No. Sheriffs run county jails. People in state prison are found through the state department of corrections locator.
How do I know which county holds the person?
Match the city of arrest to its county, then confirm the facility name on the booking paperwork. Sioux Falls is Minnehaha County.
How do visits and bond work in South Dakota?
Bond practice is local. The county jail in Sioux Falls is not the state penitentiary in the same city conversation. Rapid City is a Black Hills drive, not a Sioux Falls suburb. Winter is the plan. Always confirm details with the jail that is holding the person.
