How Tennessee jails are organized
Each county in Tennessee runs its own jail, and each has its own page here. Nashville is Davidson County (a consolidated metro government). Memphis is Shelby. Knoxville is Knox. Chattanooga is Hamilton. Clarksville is Montgomery. Murfreesboro is Rutherford — the Nashville south-suburb sheriff, not Davidson. Those are different rosters. Nashville is the state capital, but arrests are booked in the county where they happen.
County sheriffs run jails. TDOC (Riverbend, Trousdale, women’s at Debra Johnson) is prison. Metro Nashville Jail is Davidson’s system. Memphis PD holding is not Shelby’s published roster until booked. This site currently has live roster pages for 15 of 95 counties (15 jail pages, 5,446 records tracked). The other 80 counties have a jail information page with lookup steps and contacts; until a roster feed is connected, the sheriff or detention center is the official source for who is in custody there.
Finding someone in a Tennessee jail
The four big metros publish inmate searches. Rural east and west Tennessee vary. Mississippi’s DeSoto is not Shelby. No statewide merge. If you know the county, open its roster above and search by name or charge. If you only know the city of arrest, find which county the city is in first.
Criminal and circuit courts sit in the county. Davidson’s Nashville courts are not Rutherford’s Murfreesboro. General sessions handles many first appearances. The courthouse and the jail are often in different buildings. Confirm the facility name on the booking paperwork or with the attorney before you travel.
Bond, visits and money in Tennessee
Tennessee surety bondsmen are a large local industry. A Rutherford bondsman may not post Davidson. Shelby’s window is not DeSoto County, Mississippi. Bond amounts shown on a roster can change after the first court appearance. CurrentPrisonList does not post bail or accept payments.
Davidson’s facilities are not Rutherford. Shelby is a Memphis logistics problem, not Nashville. Video vendors differ. Do not copy Kentucky visit rules onto Montgomery County. Dress codes, video-visit providers and appointment times are set by each jail. Check the sheriff's website on the day of the visit.
Travel and common mistakes in Tennessee
BNA for Davidson and Rutherford (two counties). MEM for Shelby. TYS for Knox. CHA for Hamilton. I-24 and I-40 do not merge them. Take the jail address from the sheriff's website or from the contact section of the county page, not from a generic map search.
A common mistake: treating Murfreesboro as Nashville’s jail, or mixing a Mississippi DeSoto booking with Shelby County. Neighboring states have their own state pages on this site.
