How Virginia jails are organized
Each county or independent city in Virginia runs its own jail, and each has its own page here. Fairfax County is not Alexandria City and not Arlington County — three Northern Virginia jails. Richmond City is not Henrico and not Chesterfield. Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Chesapeake are separate independent cities. Roanoke City is not Roanoke County. That independent-city map is the whole point of Virginia. Richmond is the state capital, but arrests are booked in the county or independent city where they happen.
Local jails are sheriff-run, including regional jails that serve several localities (Prince William-Manassas, Hampton Roads Regional, and others). VADOC is state prison. An arrest in a city can mean a regional jail a county away. This site currently has live roster pages for 9 of 133 counties plus independent cities (8 jail pages, 6,923 records tracked). The other 124 counties plus independent cities have a jail information page with lookup steps and contacts; until a roster feed is connected, the sheriff or detention center is the official source for who is in custody there.
Finding someone in a Virginia jail
Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads publish inmate searches. Regional jails mean the holding name may not match the indictment locality. Read the facility, not only the city in the news. If you know the county or independent city, open its roster above and search by name or charge. If you only know the city of arrest, find which county or independent city the city is in first.
Circuit courts sit in counties and independent cities. Fairfax County Circuit is not Alexandria. General District Court handles many first appearances. The courthouse and the jail are often in different buildings. Confirm the facility name on the booking paperwork or with the attorney before you travel.
Bond, visits and money in Virginia
Virginia uses bondsmen and court-set conditions. A DC bondsman does not cover Fairfax automatically. Maryland PG County is another state. Regional jails have their own windows. Bond amounts shown on a roster can change after the first court appearance. CurrentPrisonList does not post bail or accept payments.
Fairfax Adult Detention is not Alexandria’s. Richmond City Justice Center is not Henrico. A regional jail visit is the regional jail’s rule sheet, not the city police department’s. Dress codes, video-visit providers and appointment times are set by each jail. Check the sheriff's website on the day of the visit.
Travel and common mistakes in Virginia
DCA and IAD serve Northern Virginia. RIC for Richmond. ORF for Hampton Roads. ROA for Roanoke. The Beltway does not merge Fairfax, Arlington, and Alexandria. Take the jail address from the sheriff's website or from the contact section of the county or independent city page, not from a generic map search.
A common mistake: treating independent cities as neighborhoods of a county, or walking to a regional jail’s member-city police HQ for a visit. Neighboring states have their own state pages on this site.
