How Vermont jails are organized
Each county in Vermont runs its own jail, and each has its own page here. Burlington is Chittenden County, the population core. Rutland, Washington (Barre-Montpelier), and Windham (Brattleboro) are the other names families search. Vermont does not run 14 large independent sheriff jails on an Ohio model — DOC facilities (Chittenden, Southern State, Northeast Kingdom) hold most people. Montpelier is the state capital, but arrests are booked in the county where they happen.
Vermont DOC runs the lockups. Some counties have holding; sentenced and pretrial people often sit in DOC facilities. A New Hampshire or New York jail across the river is another state. This site currently has live roster pages for 2 of 14 counties (2 jail pages, 1,300 records tracked). The other 12 counties have a jail information page with lookup steps and contacts; until a roster feed is connected, the sheriff or detention center is the official source for who is in custody there.
Finding someone in a Vermont jail
Inmate information is largely a DOC problem, not 14 HTML sheriff tables. This state’s pages follow that. Do not expect a Midwestern county grid density. If you know the county, open its roster above and search by name or charge. If you only know the city of arrest, find which county the city is in first.
Superior Court (criminal division) sits in the county. A Burlington arraignment can still mean a DOC facility that is not downtown. Massachusetts cases in the south are another state. The courthouse and the jail are often in different buildings. Confirm the facility name on the booking paperwork or with the attorney before you travel.
Bond, visits and money in Vermont
Vermont bail practice is not New York’s and not New Hampshire’s. Post where the court and DOC instruct. Out-of-state bondsmen may not be useful. Bond amounts shown on a roster can change after the first court appearance. CurrentPrisonList does not post bail or accept payments.
Chittenden Regional is not Brattleboro. Winter and distance in the Northeast Kingdom are the visit. Video is common for Boston families. Dress codes, video-visit providers and appointment times are set by each jail. Check the sheriff's website on the day of the visit.
Travel and common mistakes in Vermont
BTV for Chittenden. Albany, NY and Manchester, NH airports look close to southern Vermont. White River Junction is not a New Hampshire roster if the paper says Vermont. Take the jail address from the sheriff's website or from the contact section of the county page, not from a generic map search.
A common mistake: searching a county-sheriff roster model, or driving to a New Hampshire house of correction because the family lives in Hanover. Neighboring states have their own state pages on this site.
