How Wisconsin jails are organized
Each county in Wisconsin runs its own jail, and each has its own page here. Milwaukee is Milwaukee County. Madison is Dane. The Milwaukee suburbs are Waukesha, Washington, and Ozaukee — different sheriffs. Green Bay is Brown. Racine and Kenosha sit on the Illinois line. Eau Claire is Eau Claire County. These are county jails, not a statewide list. Madison is the state capital, but arrests are booked in the county where they happen.
Sheriffs run county jails. WIDOC (Waupun, Taycheedah, Dodge, Green Bay Correctional) is prison. Milwaukee PD holding is not the Milwaukee County Jail roster. This site currently has live roster pages for 4 of 72 counties (4 jail pages, 1,054 records tracked). The other 68 counties have a jail information page with lookup steps and contacts; until a roster feed is connected, the sheriff or detention center is the official source for who is in custody there.
Finding someone in a Wisconsin jail
Milwaukee and Dane publish inmate searches. Border counties (Kenosha) are not Lake County, Illinois. No statewide sheriff merge. If you know the county, open its roster above and search by name or charge. If you only know the city of arrest, find which county the city is in first.
Circuit courts sit in the county. Milwaukee County Courthouse is not Waukesha’s. A West Allis case is still often Milwaukee County. The courthouse and the jail are often in different buildings. Confirm the facility name on the booking paperwork or with the attorney before you travel.
Bond, visits and money in Wisconsin
Wisconsin cash and signature bonds appear. An Illinois bondsman in Lake County does not cover Kenosha automatically. County jail windows follow the sheriff. Bond amounts shown on a roster can change after the first court appearance. CurrentPrisonList does not post bail or accept payments.
Milwaukee County Jail / CCF split is a local trap. Dane’s jail is Madison, not Milwaukee. Waupun is DOC. Video vendors differ. Dress codes, video-visit providers and appointment times are set by each jail. Check the sheriff's website on the day of the visit.
Travel and common mistakes in Wisconsin
MKE for Milwaukee and Waukesha. MSN for Dane. GRB for Brown. ORD looks close to Kenosha and is an Illinois landing. I-94 does not merge Kenosha with Lake County, Illinois. Take the jail address from the sheriff's website or from the contact section of the county page, not from a generic map search.
A common mistake: treating Waukesha as Milwaukee’s jail, or mixing a Kenosha booking with Waukegan, Illinois. Neighboring states have their own state pages on this site.
