How West Virginia jails are organized
Each county in West Virginia runs its own jail, and each has its own page here. Charleston is Kanawha County. Huntington is Cabell. Morgantown is Monongalia. Wheeling is Ohio County (that name is not the State of Ohio). Martinsburg is Berkeley, looking at the DC-Baltimore rail line. Many people are held in regional jails, not a historic county turret. Charleston is the state capital, but arrests are booked in the county where they happen.
West Virginia’s Regional Jail and Correctional Facility Authority runs regional jails that serve groups of counties (Western, Southwestern, Central, Northern, Eastern, Tygart Valley, North Central, Potomac Highlands, Southern). County names on a court paper may not match the regional jail’s door. WVDOC is the prison system. This site currently has live roster pages for 2 of 55 counties (2 jail pages, 0 records tracked). The other 53 counties have a jail information page with lookup steps and contacts; until a roster feed is connected, the sheriff or detention center is the official source for who is in custody there.
Finding someone in a West Virginia jail
Inmate locators often follow the regional jail, not 55 separate HTML sheriffs. This is the West Virginia difference. Ohio County, West Virginia is not Cleveland. If you know the county, open its roster above and search by name or charge. If you only know the city of arrest, find which county the city is in first.
Circuit courts still sit in the county. A Kanawha indictment can mean a regional jail that is not downtown Charleston. Magistrate courts handle many first appearances. The courthouse and the jail are often in different buildings. Confirm the facility name on the booking paperwork or with the attorney before you travel.
Bond, visits and money in West Virginia
Bondsmen work the regional jail that actually holds the person. A Pennsylvania bondsman does not cover Berkeley automatically. Post at the facility named after intake. Bond amounts shown on a roster can change after the first court appearance. CurrentPrisonList does not post bail or accept payments.
Visit the regional jail on the paper, not the courthouse county out of habit. Video is common in the mountains. Winter roads are a visit fact. Dress codes, video-visit providers and appointment times are set by each jail. Check the sheriff's website on the day of the visit.
Travel and common mistakes in West Virginia
CRW for Kanawha. HTS for Cabell. MGW for Monongalia. PIT and IAD look close to the northern and eastern panhandles and are other states’ airports. Take the jail address from the sheriff's website or from the contact section of the county page, not from a generic map search.
A common mistake: driving to the county seat jail that no longer holds most inmates, or mixing Ohio County, WV with the State of Ohio. Neighboring states have their own state pages on this site.
