Scotland’s high-security men’s prison
HMP Shotts (ML7 4LE) is SPS’s primary high-security men’s establishment. Men arrive after classification, often from locals such as Barlinnie or Edinburgh, once sentence length and security category require Shotts conditions.
Inspection reports discuss regime and safety; they never substitute for a visitor booking line.
Locating someone at Shotts
High-security placement is never on a public website. SPS enquiry procedures apply. GOV.UK Find a prisoner does not include Shotts.
Media reporting a “Shotts transfer” is not confirmation your relative is there — wait for SPS or legal confirmation.
High-security visiting rules
Shotts visits require strict advance booking, identity checks, and compliance with SPS security instructions published for the establishment. Read the current Shotts visitor page on sps.gov.uk; policies for high-security locations change with national security guidance.
Do not bring prohibited items to the gate — phones, smartwatches, and excess cash are common reasons for turned-away visits.
Shotts Road in Lanarkshire
Shotts station on the Edinburgh–Glasgow line is nearby; many families still taxi from Motherwell or Livingston. The prison sits beside the village — follow SPS signage, not a generic “Shotts” pin in a map app.
Questions about HMP Shotts
