Northern Ireland’s main men’s prison
Maghaberry Prison on Maghaberry Road (BT67 0LT) is operated by the Northern Ireland Prison Service (NIPS). It holds adult men in high-security and remand conditions, serving courts across Northern Ireland.
It is not Magilligan on the north coast, and it is not Hydebank Wood’s young offenders and women’s campus.
Locating someone in NIPS custody
Northern Ireland does not publish a prisoner roster. Use the Northern Ireland Prison Service hub on justice-ni.gov.uk and the contact routes NIPS publishes — not GOV.UK Find a prisoner for England.
Cross-border families from the Republic should still use NIPS for someone held in Northern Ireland jurisdiction.
Visiting Maghaberry
Visit applications, ID, and session booking are set by NIPS and can change with security status. Read Maghaberry’s current pages on justice-ni.gov.uk before travel; we do not copy visit grids that NIPS updates locally.
High-security visits may require additional approval time — plan ahead of birthdays, not the morning of.
Maghaberry Road from Belfast
Lisburn and Belfast are the usual starting points; the M1 and A26 feed Maghaberry. Lisburn railway station plus taxi is common for visitors without cars.
Allow extra time for vehicle search at the prison entrance.
