Međimurje County: how this area actually works
Flat, fertile, densely settled by Croatian standards. You can cross the county quickly and learn nothing. Varaždin County to the south. Hungary and Slovenia outside. Međimurska županija is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Međimurje County.
Small industry, agriculture, and commuting. Čakovec is tidy and prosperous and not a metropolis. Hungarian is part of local history. It does not move a Croatian posjet into a Hungarian intézet. Put Čakovec in the plan for a concrete reason — the county seat and castle town.
Prelog matters here because it is the second town, toward the Drava. Put Mursko Središće in the plan for a concrete reason — a town on the Mura toward Slovenia. The administrative centre is Čakovec. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.
Finding someone held in Međimurje County
Čakovec courts serve the county. National zatvori take it from there. Lepoglava, in Varaždin County, is the nearest famous prison and not an address to assume. Zagreb is the other guess. Confirm. There is no public roster you can query on the Ministry of Justice. Placement is an administrative fact, released to the people entitled to it, not a webpage.
A first arrest in Međimurje County can be followed by a transfer to another county if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. Croatia’s zatvorski sustav is national. Zagreb’s kazneni zatvor and Lepoglava in Varaždin County are different gates. A coastal arrest can still end inland. Nedelišće matters here because it is a large village beside Čakovec.
Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact the Croatian prison administration, those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.
Visits and family practicalities
Posjet at the named institution. Čakovec is a reasonable base only for a northern gate you have already verified. Bring a passport or national ID that matches the visitor approval exactly. A photo on a phone is not an identity document at a prison in Međimurje County. Rules on property, cash, clothing, and how many people may attend are set for each institution and change; copy them from the current official page rather than from a forum post about last year.
Crossing into Hungary because the border is open and the town on the other side looks continuous. If you are travelling from abroad, assume the visit is not a same-day add-on to a flight. Approval, the journey from Čakovec, and the time spent at the gate rarely fit between a morning landing and an evening departure. Put Štrigova in the plan for a concrete reason — a wine village in the hills, not a prison.
Getting around Međimurje County
Short, good roads to Varaždin and to the Hungarian border. The Zagreb motorway is a little further south. Čakovec is on the northern rail map. Useful regionally. Zagreb. Graz or Budapest are foreign airports for a Croatian institution.
Ordinary. The county is small enough that the error is always the border or the wrong prison, not the distance inside it. Save the gate address in Croatian as well as English, and carry a paper copy. Rural approaches to institutions are often poorly labelled for visitors who only followed a motorway sign into Čakovec. Hungary and Slovenia border the county. BV and URSIKS are not the Croatian prison administration.
