Olomouc Region: how this area actually works
The south is the Haná plain, flat and agricultural. The north rises into the Jeseníky mountains along the Polish border, with deep valleys and slower roads. It borders Pardubice, South Moravia, Zlín, and Moravian-Silesian Region, plus Poland in the Jeseníky. Olomoucký kraj is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Olomouc Region.
Olomouc is administration, the university hospital, and food processing. Šumperk and the mountain fringe are a different, thinner economy. The city’s UNESCO column and student life have nothing to do with the visit list at Mírov. Do not let a guidebook set the day’s route. Olomouc is the regional capital on the Morava, with the university and the regional court.
People heading for Olomouc still need Mírov on the list: the hill village in the Šumperk district whose high-security věznice is a national institution. Šumperk is the northern district capital and the practical town for anyone travelling to Mírov. The administrative centre is Olomouc. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.
Finding someone held in Olomouc Region
The regional court is in Olomouc. District courts include Přerov, Prostějov, Šumperk, and Jeseník. Mírov, in the Šumperk district, holds men in high-security conditions under VS ČR and receives prisoners from far outside the region. Olomouc itself is a court and transfer point, not a synonym for that hilltop gate. Name-search sites that scrape court journalism are not Vězeňská služba České republiky (VS ČR). They miss transfers and they invent certainty. Use the official channel.
A first arrest in Olomouc Region can be followed by a transfer to another region if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. Classification, not the kraj on the first police stamp, decides whether someone stays nearby or moves to a national institution such as Valdice or Mírov. People heading for Olomouc still need Přerov on the list: the southern rail junction on the Morava.
Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact Vězeňská služba České republiky (VS ČR), those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.
Visits and family practicalities
Mírov návštěvy are limited and must be approved in advance. An Olomouc city appointment, if that is even the institution, is a different day. Bring a passport or national ID that matches the visitor approval exactly. A photo on a phone is not an identity document at a věznice in Olomouc Region. Rules on property, cash, clothing, and how many people may attend are set for each institution and change; copy them from the current official page rather than from a forum post about last year.
Stopping in Olomouc’s old square because the region field says Olomouc, when the institution is Mírov, a drive into the Jeseníky foothills. If you are travelling from abroad, assume the visit is not a same-day add-on to a flight. Approval, the journey from Olomouc, and the time spent at the gate rarely fit between a morning landing and an evening departure. Jeseník is the spa town deep in the mountains near the Polish border.
Getting around Olomouc Region
The D35 / D1 corridor links Olomouc toward Brno and Ostrava. The road from Mohelnice toward Mírov and Šumperk is not a motorway. Olomouc is on the main east-west line. Šumperk is a branch. Mírov needs a car or a taxi from a small station area. Ostrava or Brno, or Prague plus rail. Olomouc is a rail city first.
Jeseníky snow reaches Mírov’s roads while the Haná plain is only wet. Check the mountain forecast, not the city one. Save the gate address in Czech as well as English, and carry a paper copy. Rural approaches to institutions are often poorly labelled for visitors who only followed a motorway sign into Olomouc.
