Plzeň Region: how this area actually works
The city sits where rivers meet on the way to the Berounka. Westward the Český Les and Šumava approaches rise toward the German border; northward is the spa country of Karlovy Vary’s neighbour. The region borders Germany, Karlovy Vary, Ústí nad Labem, Central Bohemia, and South Bohemia. Plzeňský kraj is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Plzeň Region.
Škoda transportation and engineering, Pilsner brewing, and cross-border work toward Bavaria set the commute. Factory shifts and German weekend traffic share the D5. German is widely heard in shops near the border and almost never a substitute for Czech on a VS ČR form. People heading for Plzeň still need Plzeň on the list: the regional capital at the river confluence, with the courthouse and the local věznice.
Klatovy is the south-western town under the Šumava approaches. People heading for Plzeň still need Domažlice on the list: the Chod border town on the way to Bavaria. The administrative centre is Plzeň. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.
Finding someone held in Plzeň Region
The regional court is in Plzeň, with district courts in towns such as Klatovy, Domažlice, Tachov, and Rokycany. Plzeň has its own VS ČR institution. People are also moved to prisons elsewhere in Bohemia when security or space requires it. A Bavarian lawyer’s assumption that “the border city holds them” is not a placement. There is no public roster you can query on vscr.cz. Placement is an administrative fact, released to the people entitled to it, not a webpage.
A first arrest in Plzeň Region can be followed by a transfer to another region if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. Classification, not the kraj on the first police stamp, decides whether someone stays nearby or moves to a national institution such as Valdice or Mírov. Tachov is a western border district centre north of the D5.
Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact Vězeňská služba České republiky (VS ČR), those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.
Visits and family practicalities
Návštěvy follow the Plzeň věznice page on vscr.cz unless the order names another institution. The desk compares your document to the approved list letter by letter. If your booking name and your passport diverge — a missing middle name, a transliteration — fix it before you travel to Plzeň. Rules on property, cash, clothing, and how many people may attend are set for each institution and change; copy them from the current official page rather than from a forum post about last year.
Driving from Nuremberg or Munich and going straight to the brewery district, or to the courthouse, instead of the address on the visit approval. If you are travelling from abroad, assume the visit is not a same-day add-on to a flight. Approval, the journey from Plzeň, and the time spent at the gate rarely fit between a morning landing and an evening departure. People heading for Plzeň still need Rokycany on the list: the town on the motorway side toward Prague, often a commute rather than a destination.
Getting around Plzeň Region
The D5 motorway runs Prague–Plzeň–Rozvadov and into Germany. Border queues at weekends are a real slot risk. The Prague–Plzeň–Cheb and Prague–Plzeň–Munich corridors stop at Plzeň hlavní nádraží. Local prisons are a bus or taxi beyond the station. Most visitors use Prague, or a German airport plus the D5. Plzeň’s own airfield is not a family-visit hub.
Winter weather on the Český Les roads and summer Friday traffic toward Bavaria both need slack. Save the gate address in Czech as well as English, and carry a paper copy.
