Åland: how this area actually works
Autonomy means local administration and a demilitarised, Swedish-speaking life. It does not mean a separate prison service that publishes names, and it does not mean Kriminalvården from Sweden runs the cells. Criminal cases have their own Åland path into the Finnish legal order. The provincial government cannot tell you who is detained. A ferry company cannot either. If a lawyer says the person is already in Turku’s region, Uusimaa, or Hämeenlinna, the archipelago holiday is the wrong plan.
Short police custody on the islands is not the same as a RISE vankila on the mainland. Ask which one applies today. Sentenced prisoners and many remand prisoners are held in mainland establishments, so the visit is a Finnish prison visit under RISE rules, often in a region this site covers separately. Women’s closed custody may be Hämeenlinna. Do not search Mariehamn for a national prison that is not there. Do not search Stockholm either, unless the case is actually Swedish, which is a different country.
Ferries cancel in winter weather and fill in summer. An approved mainland visit that you tried to combine with an Åland crossing will fail when the ship slips. Probation or a community sanction, if that is the status, is not a gate in Mariehamn and not a gate on the mainland. Read the latest decision. If it names a vankila, open that region’s page and follow RISE. The autonomy is real. It does not keep the person on the island for your convenience.
Finding someone held in Åland
Confirm placement with the lawyer and, when the person is in a RISE establishment, through rikosseuraamus.fi. Åland police will not give you a roster of mainland prisons. Bring the date of birth and case number. Embassies must be told which country and which system, because families say Sweden, Finland and Åland in one sentence. Only one of those is the custody. Swedish prison pages will not list a RISE prisoner. Finnish pages will not list a Swedish one.
Write the establishment and the region before you buy any ferry. If the person is in Southwest Finland, use Turku. If the person is in Uusimaa, use Helsinki Airport in Vantaa and the named capital vankila. If the person is in Kanta-Häme, use Hämeenlinna or Riihimäki as the letter says. Mariehamn is the right trip only if the person is actually still there. Ask that question in plain words.
Visits and family practicalities
If the visit is on the mainland, book it as that establishment tells you. If the person is still in local custody on Åland, you still need official permission, not a tourist schedule. This page lists no hours. Ferry timetables are not visiting hours. Align them only after a slot exists, and keep a next sailing.
Bring a passport. Children’s permission and consent follow the establishment that actually holds the person, which may be a mainland vankila with a Finnish working language even though your Åland paperwork is in Swedish. Ask for an interpreter if you need one. Read that establishment’s property rules. A cabin bag from the cruise is the wrong bag for a closed prison.
Getting around Åland
Ferries run from Turku and from Stockholm, and Mariehamn is sometimes only a stop on a Stockholm–Turku ship. Getting off because the name was announced is not a plan. Air links to Mariehamn are small and weather-hit. If the prison is on the mainland, stay on the route that reaches that region. Use RISE’s directions there. A pin on Mariehamn’s harbour is a harbour pin.
Book refundable crossings until the placement is clear. Add identification time on the mainland and a missed-ship option. Do not promise a child that a fortress island and a visit are the same afternoon. If the person is in Hämeenlinna or Vantaa, the archipelago is a detour. Åland’s autonomy is important and still not a prison address.
