Berlin’s remand and local JVA
JVA Berlin-Moabit at Alt-Moabit 12a, 10559 Berlin, is Land Berlin’s central remand and local prison for men. Fresh arrests from Berlin courts and the nearby justice campus often land here before classification sends some prisoners to Tegel or out of state.
Remand (Untersuchungshaft) and sentenced prisoners follow different legal tracks inside the same gate.
ZASt and written Auskunft
Use Berlin’s Zentrale Auskunftsstelle for procedural help. Named telephone location checks are blocked; written requests with a return address are the data-protection-compliant path.
Sprechschein, booking line, Fri–Sun closed to social visits
Remand visits may require a Sprechschein from the prosecutor or court before the JVA can admit you — that is a legal step, not an online form. Sentenced prisoners use the Moabit visit booking process Berlin publishes; the visit coordination number is 030 9014-5535 in official summaries.
Berlin’s Moabit guidance states that social visits are not offered Friday through Sunday — plan weekday travel and verify on berlin.de in case of exceptional closures.
Do not copy Tegel’s rhythm onto Moabit; the two JVAs publish separate Besuchsregeln.
Alt-Moabit beside the Spree
U-Bahn U9 to Turmstraße or S-Bahn to Hauptbahnhof, then a short walk along Alt-Moabit. Tourists confuse the address with Moabit district cafés — the JVA entrance is the justice campus side, not a random apartment block.
