JVA Berlin-Tegel

Tegel is the Berlin name families say when someone lands in pre-trial or sentenced custody in the capital — a huge closed men’s JVA on Seidelstraße in Reinickendorf where visits are short, prisoner-led, and never confirmed by a casual phone call to the gate.

Berlin’s largest closed men’s prison

Justizvollzugsanstalt Berlin-Tegel at Seidelstraße 39, 13507 Berlin, holds adult men under Land Berlin’s Justizvollzug. It is a sentenced and remand-capable closed prison — not the remand-heavy Moabit complex, though both sit in Berliners’ mental map as “inside.”

Capacity and wing structure change with population management. Berlin publishes facility pages on berlin.de; there is no federal inmate search.

Auskunft — write, do not phone for names

Berlin’s Zentrale Auskunftsstelle (ZASt) explains addresses and visit rules on the phone, but telephone checks on whether a named person is in Tegel are refused under Berlin’s prison data-protection law. Written Auskunft with a postal reply address is the lawful route.

If the person was in Untersuchungshaft at Moabit yesterday, they may still be there — do not assume a transfer to Tegel without a letter from the prisoner or counsel.

Besuche — prisoner applies, about forty minutes

Social visits at Tegel typically require the prisoner to apply for the visit first; families cannot always “book cold.” Berlin’s public guidance describes standard visit slots of roughly forty minutes on a limited monthly rhythm — exact days and caps are on the live JVA Tegel and ZASt pages, not on this site.

Contact the visit desk via the numbers Berlin publishes (visit coordination is associated with ZASt on 030 9014-5656 in official summaries). Bring passport or Personalausweis; a driving licence alone is often rejected.

Re-read berlin.de the week you travel. Berlin JVAs change Besuchszeiten when staffing or security shifts.

Seidelstraße and the U-Bahn

Tegel is in Reinickendorf — U-Bahn line U6 to Alt-Tegel or Borsigwerke, then bus or walk per Berlin’s visitor map. Driving means street parking in a residential grid; allow time for the security queue at Seidelstraße 39.
