Södermanland County: how this area actually works
Nyköping is the administrative capital, a compact former capital of the province, and the town people fly into via Skavsta. Eskilstuna is larger, more industrial, and a different rail trip from Stockholm. District-court papers name the tingsrätt that is actually seized of the case. Do not assume every Södermanland prosecution is called in Nyköping. Appeals leave the county for Svea hovrätt. The county administrative board does not operate cells.
Hall is a closed anstalt for men, not an open farm and not a remand häkte. Remand after a local arrest may start in a häkte serving these courts, including Stockholm units when that is where the police lodged the person, and only later become a Hall placement. Anstalten Hällby, in Eskilstuna, is a different establishment again. Similar names are a trap: Hall and Hällby are not spelling variants of one prison. Read the letter character by character.
Kumla in Örebro County and prisons in Stockholm County also receive people whose cases began here. A Södermanland charge is a court fact. It is not a guarantee of a local cell for the whole sentence. Open anstalter, used later in some sentences, can sit far from both Nyköping and Eskilstuna. Ask if a transfer is dated. Probation in the community is frivård, and it has no visiting room at Hall.
Finding someone held in Södermanland County
There is no public list of who is at Hall or Hällby. Kriminalvården confirms placement through official family channels described on kriminalvarden.se, and lawyers can usually say whether someone is still on remand or has moved. Nyköping or Eskilstuna police will not bypass that. Social media claims that Hall’s population is posted online confuse press coverage of the prison with a roster. Coverage is not a list of names.
Foreign relatives should collect the establishment name, the person’s date of birth and any case number before calling. Embassies explain the Swedish system. They are not told each transfer on the morning it happens. If papers say häkte, do not arrive at Hall with häkte expectations, and if they say Hall, do not arrive at Hällby because the towns felt closer. Three wrong gates in one county is a common itinerary. Slow down and match the document.
Visits and family practicalities
Closed-prison visits at Hall require advance approval. Being “family” in ordinary speech is not the list. Remand visits, if the person is still in a häkte, follow different and usually tighter rules. Book only through the path on kriminalvarden.se for the establishment named. This page does not publish hours, because copying them would be pretending they cannot change. Check the live instruction before you take leave from work.
Passport checks are normal for visitors from abroad. Children come only if the establishment’s own rules allow, which may mean another guardian’s written consent lodged early. Swedish is the language of the gate. Ask about interpretation in advance. Property rules for phones, medicine and anything you hoped to hand over are specific to Hall or to the häkte, and they are not interchangeable. Read the sheet that matches the building.
Getting around Södermanland County
Skavsta airport sits near Nyköping and is marketed to Stockholm passengers, which scrambles everyone’s geography. Hall is not a Skavsta shuttle. It is a Södertälje-side journey best planned from Södertälje Syd or the E4, using Kriminalvården’s directions. Eskilstuna is on the Svealandsbanan from Stockholm. Nyköping is on the main southern line toward Norrköping. Those are three different stations. Pick the one that belongs to the establishment, then the hotel.
Summer traffic toward the archipelago towns of Trosa and Oxelösund, and winter stops on the E4, both shrink the gap between landing and a visit. A court morning in one town and a visit in another rarely share a lunch hour. Price a taxi from Skavsta honestly if trains do not match the slot you were given. Map pins labelled only “Södermanland prison” drop cars at the wrong industrial estate. Use the agency’s route, then add spare time.
