Valais: how this area actually works
Sion is the government town. Sierre, Martigny and Brig mark the valley. The language changes as you go up, which changes the visit and not the fact of a single cantonal authority. That authority will not confirm a stranger’s relative. kkjpd.ch will not either. A mountain guide is not a source.
If the papers name a Valais establishment, match the town and the language. If they name Bochuz, you want Vaud. If they name Champ-Dollon, you want Geneva. If they name a German-speaking upper-valley unit, do not arrive with only French forms, and the reverse. Women’s placement may be outside the canton. Remand and sentence can split. The resort is not the default gate.
Alpine roads close. Resort weeks sell out. Probation in Sion is not a cell in Zermatt. If the person has been moved down the lake to Vaud, leave the valley. Recheck. Families keep a chalet because the booking was non-refundable and then miss the only canton that mattered. Sion is the capital. Zermatt and Verbier are not. Take the branch to a resort only if the establishment is on that branch, which is the exception.
Finding someone held in Valais
Confirm through the lawyer or the holding canton. Police will not read a list in either language. Bring the date of birth and case number. Embassies need Valais, not a resort. A news item from Verbier in winter is not a placement.
Write Sion or the real town, and write the language. Foreign visitors should ask whether they need the valley, Lausanne’s canton, or Geneva. If the person is in a German-speaking upper district, say Wallis as well as Valais so the driver understands. If the person is outside the canton, do not enter the valley at all. Wallis is the German name of the same canton, used up the valley. Match the language of the district to the interpreter request. Do not book a French-only plan for a German-speaking unit, or the reverse.
Visits and family practicalities
Book with the holder in the language of that establishment. No hours are printed here. Resort timetables are not visiting hours. Check the live page.
Bring a passport. Children need permission and consent. Ask for an interpreter matching the establishment’s language, not the resort’s English. Read the property rules. A ski bag will not be the visiting bag. Weather closes roads after you have already left Sion. Add a spare connection, and do not treat a chalet deposit as a reason to ignore a transfer to another canton.
Getting around Valais
Sion is on the railway from Lausanne and Geneva. Brig connects toward the upper valley and the Lötschberg. Zermatt is a branch, not a prison shuttle. Geneva Airport is the usual flight. Use official directions. A pin on a peak or a resort square is not the entrance.
Add weather slack and identification time. Stay in the holding town, not in the most famous one. If the person is in Vaud or Geneva, stay on the lake. The valley is a long way to be wrong. If the papers name Bochuz or Champ-Dollon, stay on Lake Geneva and skip the Rhône valley. The passes are a long way to discover you wanted Vaud or Geneva.
