Zürich: how this area actually works
The city and the canton share a name, which hides Winterthur, Uster, and a ring of towns that are not Regensdorf. Courts sit in the city. A hearing and a prison visit can use different stations on the S-Bahn. Remand for Zürich cases is often not at Pöschwies, which is primarily closed sentenced custody. Ask which regime you are dealing with. The cantonal police will not read you a list because the city is large. The city’s tourist office will not either.
Pöschwies holds adult men for longer sentences under Zürich’s authority. People whose cases began elsewhere in German-speaking Switzerland can be placed under concordat arrangements, and Zürich cases can be placed outside the canton. You cannot deduce the gate from the accent. Hindelbank, in Bern, is the women’s prison many German-speaking families have heard of, and it is a different canton. If the letter says Hindelbank, leave Regensdorf. If it says a remand unit in the city, do not ride to Pöschwies because the name was familiar.
Regensdorf is not the Hauptbahnhof. Families book a hotel on the lake and call the last mile a formality. It is the part that makes you late. Probation and community measures are not a visiting room. If the person has been moved to another canton under a concordat, a Zürich week will not become a visit. Recheck the establishment the week you fly. Coordination between cantons is real. A public index of the result is not.
Finding someone held in Zürich
Confirm the canton and the establishment through the lawyer or the Zürich authority named on the papers. kkjpd.ch can orient you about Swiss structure and still cannot say who is held. Bring the date of birth and case number. Embassies must be told the canton, not merely “Switzerland.” A Geneva office will not see a Zürich file. A news item about an arrest at the station goes stale when someone is moved to Regensdorf or out of the canton.
Write Pöschwies, the remand unit, or the other canton’s prison at the top of the plan. Foreign visitors should get the German spelling. Zurich without the umlaut is fine in an email and still not a substitute for the establishment name. If the person is at Champ-Dollon, you want Geneva and French-language procedures. If the person is at Hindelbank, you want Bern. The airport in Kloten is in this canton and is not the prison.
Visits and family practicalities
Visits are approved by the holding canton, person by person. Book only as that authority instructs. This page has no hours. A timetable copied from a Geneva prison will not open a Zürich door. Check the live cantonal page for the named establishment. High-profile coverage of Swiss prisons does not make them walk-in buildings.
Bring a passport if you are foreign. Children need that establishment’s permission and any consent. German is the working language at Zürich facilities. Ask for an interpreter in advance. Read the property sheet for Pöschwies if that is the approval, and a different sheet for a remand unit. Do not pack from a generic “Swiss prison” article. Phones are refused in ordinary ways.
Getting around Zürich
Zurich Airport is in Kloten, with trains to the Hauptbahnhof. Pöschwies is an S-Bahn and bus problem toward Regensdorf, using the canton’s directions, not a pin on the lake or the station. Winterthur is a different line. Give the driver the establishment’s name. “Zurich prison” points too many drivers at the wrong district.
Add identification time and do not stack a city hearing with a Regensdorf visit unless the slack is real. Stay on the correct side of the network. If the person is in another canton, change the train rather than using Zürich as a scenic base. The concordat may explain why they were moved. It will not meet you at the airport.
