Salzburg Land: federal prison visits and city mix-ups

Salzburg is both a city and a Land, which is the first mix-up, and the prison is a federal Justizanstalt, which is the second. The Land government does not run it and does not publish names. Visitors flying in for the festival or the old town assume the gate is beside the fortress. It is not a tourist entrance. A case that began here may still be in custody in Linz’s Land, in Vienna, or at another house after classification. Read the establishment before you trust the postcard.

Salzburg: how this area actually works

The city holds the court people picture. The Land also includes Hallein, St. Johann and the mountain districts toward the Tauern. Appeals from this region are tied to the Oberlandesgericht in Linz, in Upper Austria, so a hearing can leave the Land while a prisoner stays, or the reverse. The Festung and the Landhaus cannot confirm a detainee. German police across the Bavarian border cannot confirm an Austrian one. justiz.gv.at and the lawyer are the route.

The Salzburg Justizanstalt is the local federal house, and it is still only the right door if the letter says so. Do not collapse it with a Linz, Garsten or Suben address because Upper Austria is the appeal Land. Do not collapse it with a Bavarian JVA because the language is the same. Remand and sentenced regimes differ. Women’s placement may be outside the Land. “Salzburg prison” must be matched to the JA name, not to the station announcement.

Festival weeks fill every bed and every taxi. That has nothing to do with whether a Besuch is approved and everything to do with whether you can sleep near the gate. Probation in the city is not a cell. If the person has been moved to Upper Austria or Vienna, a riverside hotel will not help. Recheck before you pay festival prices for a week that is only a court date, or only a visit, or neither.

Finding someone held in Salzburg

Confirm through the lawyer or the ministry route. Salzburg police will not read a list to match a festival itinerary. Bring the date of birth and case number. Embassies should hear that the case is Austrian, not German, when the family lives in Bavaria. They are not copied on transfers to Linz. A news item from Hallein goes stale after a move.

Write the JA and whether it is in the city, elsewhere in the Land, or in another Land. Foreign visitors should distinguish the city of Salzburg from the federal prison and from Upper Austria. If the person is in Linz, Garsten or Suben, use that page. If the person is at Josefstadt or Stein, you are going east. The old town is the right base only when the establishment’s directions put you there.

Visits and family practicalities

Book Besuch for the named house. Festival calendars are not visiting hours. This page lists none. Check the live notice. A timetable copied from a German prison across the border is the wrong country. A timetable copied from Vienna is the wrong Land.

Bring a passport. Children need permission and any consent. German is the working language. Ask for an interpreter. Bavarian familiarity is not a waiver of property rules. Read the sheet for the Salzburg JA if that is the approval. Pack after reading. A gift from the old-town shops is still subject to the gate.

Getting around Salzburg

Salzburg Airport is west of the city, close in kilometres and still a transfer. Trains from Vienna and Munich meet at the Hauptbahnhof. Hallein is a short regional hop and a different address. Mountain buses toward the south of the Land are irrelevant unless the papers say so. Use the JA’s directions. A pin on the fortress or the cathedral is the wrong landmark.

Add identification time and a taxi you have priced, especially in festival season. A morning hearing in Linz and an afternoon in Salzburg is a real journey, not a side street. Stay near the establishment. If the person is in Upper Austria or Bavaria is a rumour rather than a document, follow the document. The border is near. The systems are not merged.

Questions families actually ask

Does the Land of Salzburg run the prison?
No. The Justizanstalt is federal, under the Ministry of Justice. The city and the Land do not keep an inmate list.
Is a Salzburg case always held in the city?
No. Remand may be local, and a sentence or an appeal can place the person in Upper Austria or elsewhere. Confirm the current JA.
Can Bavarian police confirm the placement?
No. A shared language and a nearby border do not create a shared roster. Use the Austrian lawyer or justiz.gv.at.

Other Bundesländer in Austria

land · EisenstadtBurgenlandBurgenlandBurgenland is the eastern Land, seated in Eisenstadt, a short ride from Vienna and a long cultural step from it. The federal Justizanstalt associated with the Land is not run by the Land government and does not publish names. Many cases that touch Burgenland are in practice Vienna custody, at Josefstadt or another capital house, or later at Stein in Lower Austria. Families who book Eisenstadt because the person lived in Neusiedl or Oberwart may be visiting the wrong Land. Read the JA name first.Open this area →land · KlagenfurtCarinthiaKärntenCarinthia is Austria’s southern Land, seated in Klagenfurt, with Villach, the Wörthersee and mountain borders toward Slovenia and Italy. A federal Justizanstalt serves the Land from the Klagenfurt side. It is not run by the Land government, it does not publish names, and it is not Graz-Karlau merely because both places feel southern. Families on a lake holiday discover the difference when the visit is in a different town from the swimming. Confirm the establishment before you trust the water.Open this area →land · St. PöltenLower AustriaNiederösterreichLower Austria surrounds Vienna and is a different Land, seated in St. Pölten. Justizanstalt Stein, at Stein an der Donau beside Krems, is the large sentenced house Austrians name for long custody. Justizanstalt Schwarzau, in the south of the Land, is associated with women. Both are federal, under the Ministry of Justice, not under the Lower Austrian government. Neither publishes a list of names. A Vienna remand at Josefstadt and a later move to Stein are the classic sequence, and they are not the same day trip.Open this area →land · GrazStyriaSteiermarkStyria is seated in Graz, in the south, with Leoben, Kapfenberg and the Mur valley running toward the mountains. Justizanstalt Graz-Karlau is the establishment this site groups with the Land: a federal men’s prison, not a city jail and not Josefstadt. The Ministry of Justice runs it. There is no public list of names. A Graz case and a Vienna remand are different gates, and a family that flies to Graz because the crime was reported there may find the person still in the capital, or the reverse.Open this area →land · InnsbruckTyrolTirolTyrol is the alpine Land, seated in Innsbruck, split in spirit between the Inn valley and the districts beyond the Brenner and the Arlberg. The federal Justizanstalt in Innsbruck is not run by the Land and does not publish names. The Oberlandesgericht Innsbruck hears appeals from Tyrol and Vorarlberg, so the city draws families whose relative is actually in Bregenz’s Land, or still here, or already moved east. A ski week is not a Besuch. Confirm the establishment before you trust the valley.Open this area →land · LinzUpper AustriaOberösterreichUpper Austria is seated in Linz, on the Danube west of Lower Austria, with Wels, Steyr and the Innviertel toward Braunau. Prisons here are federal Justizanstalten, not Land jails. Establishments associated with this Land include the house in Linz, Garsten near Steyr, and Suben on the Inn. They are not interchangeable, and none of them publishes names. A Linz case can still finish at Stein or in another Land. The similar English names Upper and Lower Austria are a separate trap.Open this area →land · ViennaViennaWienVienna is both a city and a Land, and its prisons are not run by the city. Justizanstalten belong to the federal Ministry of Justice. Justizanstalt Wien-Josefstadt, in the 8th district, is the remand house families mean when they say the Vienna jail. It is not the only establishment that can hold someone whose case began here, and it is not Stein in Lower Austria, where long sentences are widely associated. Austria publishes no detainee list. This page will not invent a visiting clock.Open this area →land · BregenzVorarlbergVorarlbergVorarlberg is Austria’s western end, seated in Bregenz, with Dornbirn, Feldkirch and the Rhine plain toward Switzerland and Liechtenstein. The federal Justizanstalt that serves the Land is not run by Bregenz city and does not publish names. Appeals go to Innsbruck, over or through the Arlberg, in Tyrol. Families treat the Land as a suburb of Switzerland because the dialect and the border are daily life. Swiss prisons are cantonal and Swiss. This gate, if the letter names it, is Austrian.Open this area →
