Vorarlberg: how this area actually works
Bregenz is the capital on the lake. Feldkirch is the court town many files actually use, further up the valley toward Liechtenstein. Dornbirn sits between them. Those are three different last miles. The Land government cannot confirm a detainee. Swiss police in St. Gallen’s canton cannot confirm an Austrian one. A Liechtenstein authority cannot either. justiz.gv.at and the Austrian lawyer are the route, even if you drove from Zurich.
Read the JA name before you assume the prison is in Bregenz rather than Feldkirch’s side of the Land, or in Innsbruck, or somewhere further east. Do not assume a Swiss concordat prison in St. Gallen or Thurgau. Remand and sentenced regimes differ. Women’s placement may be outside Vorarlberg entirely. “The prison by the lake” is not an instruction. The Rhine is a border, not a hint that the systems are pooled.
The Land is small and still easy to miss inside. A Feldkirch gate and a Bregenz hotel can fail a short slot. Probation in Dornbirn is not custody. If the person has been moved to Innsbruck, you must cross the Arlberg in winter weather or take the train, not a city bus. Recheck. Cross-border workers in the family often repeat the arrest town for months after a transfer.
Finding someone held in Vorarlberg
Confirm through the lawyer or the ministry route. Police in Bregenz or Feldkirch will not read a list. Bring the date of birth and case number. Embassies need to know the case is Austrian. A Swiss embassy is the wrong building for an Austrian placement, except for general consular help after you already know the JA. A news item from Feldkirch goes stale.
Write the establishment and the town. Foreign visitors should ask whether they need Feldkirch, Bregenz, or Innsbruck. If the person is in Tyrol, use that page. If the person is in Switzerland, you are in another country’s cantonal system and this page cannot place them. Vorarlberg is the right trip only for an Austrian JA in this Land.
Visits and family practicalities
Book Austrian Besuch the Austrian way. No hours are printed here. Swiss visiting customs from across the Rhine do not apply. Check the live notice for the named house. A timetable in a St. Gallen forum is the wrong canton and the wrong country.
Bring a passport. Children need permission and consent. German is the working language. Ask for an interpreter. Alemannic dialect and Swiss habits do not amend a property ban. Read the Austrian sheet for the correct JA. Pack for that gate. A gift bought in Switzerland is still subject to Austrian rules.
Getting around Vorarlberg
Zurich and Friedrichshafen airports are the practical fields, in other countries, followed by a road or rail crossing. Feldkirch is on the railway from Switzerland. Bregenz is on the lake line. The Arlberg train reaches Innsbruck if that is the real destination. Use the JA’s directions after you are in the correct town. A pin on the lake stage in Bregenz, or on a Rhine bridge, is not the entrance.
Add border time and identification time. Winter on the Arlberg is a reason to split an Innsbruck appeal from a Vorarlberg visit. Stay in the establishment’s town. If you came from Switzerland, you have not finished the journey by crossing the river. The correct door is the one the Austrian papers name.
