Upper Austria: how this area actually works
Linz is the court city and the seat of an Oberlandesgericht that hears appeals from a wider west, including Salzburg’s Land in many matters. A hearing in Linz does not mean the prisoner is in Linz. Garsten is a short hop toward Steyr and still a different gate. Suben is in the Innviertel, near the German border, which makes Bavarian families think of a shared system. There is no shared system. The Land government cannot confirm a detainee.
Read the JA name against the map. Linz is not Garsten. Garsten is not Suben. Stein an der Donau is Lower Austria, further east, despite the shared river. Josefstadt is Vienna. If the letter names one of those, leave the town you assumed. Remand and sentenced regimes differ. Women’s custody may be Schwarzau or another house named on the papers, not a wing you can guess in Linz. “Oberösterreich prison” is not a pin a driver can use.
The Innviertel and the Danube cities feel close until a slot is involved. Probation in Linz is not a cell at Garsten. If the person has been moved to Suben, a hotel on the Linz waterfront is the wrong base. German relatives crossing at Passau should still follow Austrian federal rules, not Bavarian visiting habits. Recheck the week you travel. A border commute does not update a placement.
Finding someone held in Upper Austria
Confirm through the lawyer or justiz.gv.at. Police in Linz, Steyr or Schärding will not read a list. Bring the date of birth and case number. Embassies explain the federal ministry system and the difference from Germany. They are not copied on moves between Garsten and Suben. A news item from Wels goes stale after a transfer.
Write the establishment, then the town. Foreign visitors should distinguish Upper Austria from Lower Austria in the email subject. If the person is at Stein, use the Krems plan. If the person is at Josefstadt, use Vienna. If the person is in Salzburg’s Land, that is another page. Linz is the right city only when the JA is the Linz house or you have a hearing there and a separate plan for the prison.
Visits and family practicalities
Book Besuch only for the named house. Three establishments do not share a courtesy. This page lists no hours. A timetable headed Oberösterreich without a JA name is useless, and one that names the wrong house is worse. Check the live ministry information for that establishment.
Bring a passport. Children need that JA’s permission and any consent. German is the working language. Ask for an interpreter. Bavarian dialect and hotel English do not amend a property ban. Read the sheet for Linz, Garsten or Suben, matching the approval. Pack after that reading. A gift bought in Passau is still a gift the gate can refuse.
Getting around Upper Austria
Linz Airport and the Westbahn from Vienna are the usual arrivals. Hörsching is not the city centre and not Garsten. Regional trains and buses serve Steyr’s side. Suben is a road or regional journey toward the Inn, using the JA’s directions, not a pin on Passau. Give the driver the establishment’s full name. “Prison near Linz” points at more than one gate.
Danube fog, Innviertel winter roads and a same-day Vienna connection all break tight plans. Stay in the establishment’s town. Add identification time. If you crossed from Germany, leave a margin at the border and still do not expect the slot to slide. If the person is in Lower Austria or Vienna, do not remain in Linz because the appeal court is here.
