Pernik: custody, visits, and how placement works

Pernik Province is the industrial basin immediately south-west of Sofia, a short commute and a separate oblast. Families treat it as a Sofia suburb. GDIN does not. The Bulgarian prison administration (GDIN) runs closed institutions for Bulgaria. Start at gdin.bg. It will not offer a name search.

Pernik: how this area actually works

A mining basin, the Struma’s upper valley, and low mountains toward Kyustendil. Sofia’s skyline is close. Sofia City, Sofia Province, and Kyustendil. Перник is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Pernik.

Heavy industry’s aftermath, commuting, and a smaller basin economy. Pernik is not a resort. The martenitsa festival is the cheerful headline. Prison placement is not festive. Pernik matters here because it is the basin city and oblast centre.

Put Radomir in the plan for a concrete reason — a town south of Pernik. Breznik matters here because it is a western town toward the hills. The administrative centre is Pernik. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.

Finding someone held in Pernik

Pernik courts are not Sofia courts, however short the drive. Sofia Central is the neighbouring capital prison and a common wrong assumption. Bobov Dol, further into Kyustendil, is the other. Read the institution. The Bulgarian prison administration (GDIN) does not publish a searchable inmate index. Guessing from news headlines or a shared surname will send you to the wrong gate.

A first arrest in Pernik can be followed by a transfer to another oblast if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. GDIN assigns prisons nationally. Sofia Central is the capital institution; Bobov Dol in Kyustendil Province is the high-security name families hear next. An oblast of arrest is not a guarantee of the cell. Put Tran in the plan for a concrete reason — a small border-side town.

Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact the Bulgarian prison administration (GDIN), those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.

Visits and family practicalities

Visits are at the named GDIN gate. A Sofia hotel may be practical and may be the wrong side of a morning jam. The desk compares your document to the approved list letter by letter. If your booking name and your passport diverge — a missing middle name, a transliteration — fix it before you travel to Pernik. Rules on property, cash, clothing, and how many people may attend are set for each institution and change; copy them from the current official page rather than from a forum post about last year.

Equating Pernik with Sofia City because the metro feels close. Sofia City is a different oblast. If you are travelling from abroad, assume the visit is not a same-day add-on to a flight. Approval, the journey from Pernik, and the time spent at the gate rarely fit between a morning landing and an evening departure. Batanovtsi matters here because it is an industrial settlement in the basin, not a landmark to navigate by.

Getting around Pernik

The Sofia ring and the road to Kyustendil. Short, and slow at peaks. Commuter rail to Sofia exists. It does not choose the prison. Sofia Airport, then a cross-city trip.

Sofia-basin inversions and ordinary commuter peaks. The distance is the trap, because it looks small. Save the gate address in Bulgarian as well as English, and carry a paper copy. Rural approaches to institutions are often poorly labelled for visitors who only followed a motorway sign into Pernik.

Questions families actually ask

Can I assume the courthouse in Pernik is the place to visit?
No. Sofia Central is the neighbouring capital prison and a common wrong assumption. Bobov Dol, further into Kyustendil, is the other. Read the institution. Confirm the institution with the Bulgarian prison administration (GDIN) before you travel.
Is there a public inmate list for Pernik?
the Bulgarian prison administration (GDIN) does not offer a public name search for Pernik or for Bulgaria as a whole. Use the official contact route on gdin.bg, a lawyer, or the court papers you already hold.
Which document matters most at the gate?
Same-day visits are a common failure, especially if you land and still need to reach a gate outside Pernik. Get approval first, then fix the journey.

oblast · BlagoevgradBlagoevgradБлагоевградBlagoevgrad Province is the south-west, the university town in the Struma valley, and the ski slopes of Bansko. It is a border oblast with North Macedonia and Greece, and a GDIN question rather than a resort question. Official visits are arranged with GDIN, not with the town hall in Blagoevgrad, and gdin.bg does not publish a roster.Open this area →oblast · BurgasBurgasБургасBurgas Province is the southern Black Sea: the port city, Nesebar and Sozopol, and a wide hinterland. Summer visitors think the coast is the oblast. GDIN thinks in institutions, and the coast is not automatically one of them. An arrest recorded in Burgas is the start of a paper trail. The Bulgarian prison administration (GDIN) decides where the person actually sleeps.Open this area →oblast · DobrichDobrichДобричDobrich Province is Dobrudzha, the agricultural north-east, with the coast at Balchik and Kavarna and a Romanian border. It is not Varna, though Varna’s airport is how many people arrive nearby. Treat Добрич as the name on the stamp and Dobrich as the English name of the same oblast. GDIN still decides the gate.Open this area →oblast · GabrovoGabrovoГабровоGabrovo Province is the Balkan range at its most town-like: Gabrovo in the Yantra gorge and Veliko Tarnovo’s neighbour, with Shipka pass above. It is a small oblast with a long industrial memory and no public inmate list. An arrest recorded in Gabrovo is the start of a paper trail. The Bulgarian prison administration (GDIN) decides where the person actually sleeps.Open this area →oblast · HaskovoHaskovoХасковоHaskovo Province is the south-central Maritsa country, Haskovo the city, Dimitrovgrad the industrial neighbour, and a Greek and Turkish border logic further south. GDIN still decides the gate.Open this area →oblast · KardzhaliKardzhaliКърджалиKardzhali Province is the eastern Rhodope, a dam-reservoir town, and a border with Greece. Bobov Dol is why this oblast appears in a custody search: the high-security prison, not the mineral baths. An arrest recorded in Kyustendil is the start of a paper trail. The Bulgarian prison administration (GDIN) decides where the person actually sleeps.Open this area →oblast · LovechLovechЛовечLovech Province is the northern fore-Balkan, Lovech the covered-bridge town, and Troyan the monastery town.
