Varaždin County: how this area actually works
The Drava plain, low hills toward Zagorje, and a short border with Slovenia and Hungary. The land is gentle and the prison is specific. Međimurje, Krapina-Zagorje, Zagreb County, and Koprivnica-Križevci. Varaždinska županija is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Varaždin County.
Varaždin’s industry and services, textile history, and a tidy county town. Lepoglava is smaller and more important for this page. The baroque old town is what guides sell. The prison administration does not sell it. Lepoglava is the prison town, the name that matters more than the baroque square.
People heading for Varaždin still need Varaždin on the list: the county seat and baroque city. Ivanec is a town west of Varaždin. The administrative centre is Varaždin. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.
Finding someone held in Varaždin County
Varaždin courts serve the north. Lepoglava’s role is national, which is why people from Split can end up here. Kazneni zatvor Lepoglava is the sentenced institution. Zagreb’s prison is the capital remand and city gate. If the region field says Varaždin, start with Lepoglava and still confirm. Name-search sites that scrape court journalism are not the Croatian prison administration. They miss transfers and they invent certainty. Use the official channel.
A first arrest in Varaždin County can be followed by a transfer to another county if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. Croatia’s zatvorski sustav is national. Zagreb’s kazneni zatvor and Lepoglava in Varaždin County are different gates. A coastal arrest can still end inland. People heading for Varaždin still need Novi Marof on the list: a town on the road from Zagreb.
Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact the Croatian prison administration, those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.
Visits and family practicalities
Posjet at Lepoglava is a planned drive from Zagreb of about an hour, or a local trip from Varaždin. Approval first. Bring a passport or national ID that matches the visitor approval exactly. A photo on a phone is not an identity document at a prison in Varaždin County. Rules on property, cash, clothing, and how many people may attend are set for each institution and change; copy them from the current official page rather than from a forum post about last year.
Staying in Varaždin’s old square when the gate is in Lepoglava, or staying in Zagreb when the transfer has already happened. If you are travelling from abroad, assume the visit is not a same-day add-on to a flight. Approval, the journey from Varaždin, and the time spent at the gate rarely fit between a morning landing and an evening departure. Ludbreg is a small town toward Koprivnica.
Getting around Varaždin County
The motorway from Zagreb reaches Varaždin. Lepoglava is a short leg off the northern roads, not a city-centre walk. Trains run from Zagreb to Varaždin. Lepoglava needs a bus or taxi at the end. Zagreb Airport, then north. Graz is sometimes considered from the Austrian side and is a different country.
Ordinary northern weather. The mistake is geographic, not seasonal. Save the gate address in Croatian as well as English, and carry a paper copy. Rural approaches to institutions are often poorly labelled for visitors who only followed a motorway sign into Varaždin. Slovenia and Hungary are close. Their prison services do not run Lepoglava.
