Zlín Region: how this area actually works
The Dřevnice valley holds Zlín. South is the Slovácko lowland toward Uherské Hradiště; east the hills climb to the Slovak border and the Vsetín valley. South Moravia, Olomouc, and the Moravian-Silesian Region are Czech neighbours. Slovakia lies to the east. Zlínský kraj is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Zlín Region.
Shoes and plastics made Zlín; engineering and services sustain it. The eastern valleys are smaller plants and a commuting pattern into the city. Functionalist Zlín looks like nowhere else in Moravia. That architecture does not include a public prison desk. People heading for Zlín still need Zlín on the list: the Baťa factory capital and seat of the regional court.
Uherské Hradiště is the southern town on the Morava, centre of Slovácko. People heading for Zlín still need Kroměříž on the list: the château and gardens town toward Haná, west of Zlín. The administrative centre is Zlín. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.
Finding someone held in Zlín Region
The regional court is in Zlín, with district courts in Uherské Hradiště, Kroměříž, and Vsetín. Many people dealt with by Zlín courts are held in South Moravian or Olomouc institutions, or further away, under VS ČR placement. Confirm the věznice. Do not invent a Zlín fortress because other regions have one. There is no public roster you can query on vscr.cz. Placement is an administrative fact, released to the people entitled to it, not a webpage.
A first arrest in Zlín Region can be followed by a transfer to another region if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. Classification, not the kraj on the first police stamp, decides whether someone stays nearby or moves to a national institution such as Valdice or Mírov. Vsetín is the valley town in the eastern hills.
Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact Vězeňská služba České republiky (VS ČR), those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.
Visits and family practicalities
Návštěvy follow whatever institution is named. If that institution is in Brno, Kuřim, or Mírov, the Zlín hotel is the wrong base. Bring a passport or national ID that matches the visitor approval exactly. A photo on a phone is not an identity document at a věznice in Zlín Region. Rules on property, cash, clothing, and how many people may attend are set for each institution and change; copy them from the current official page rather than from a forum post about last year.
Searching only “Zlín prison” in English and trusting a travel blog. The official VS ČR page for the named facility is the whole source. If you are travelling from abroad, assume the visit is not a same-day add-on to a flight. Approval, the journey from Zlín, and the time spent at the gate rarely fit between a morning landing and an evening departure. People heading for Zlín still need Otrokovice on the list: the industrial junction where most rail journeys actually change.
Getting around Zlín Region
Roads from Brno via Uherské Hradiště, and from Olomouc via Kroměříž, are the ordinary approaches. The Slovak border roads are local. Zlín’s rail link is a branch off the main corridor. Otrokovice is the junction people actually change at. Brno or Vienna, then a road transfer. Ostrava is an alternative from the north.
Hill snow in the Vsetín district and ordinary Moravian fog in the lowland need different buffers. Save the gate address in Czech as well as English, and carry a paper copy. Rural approaches to institutions are often poorly labelled for visitors who only followed a motorway sign into Zlín. The Slovak border is close at the White Carpathians. A Slovak stamp does not admit you to a Czech věznice.
