Epirus: how this area actually works
The Pindus, the Zagori stone villages, a deep lake, and a short coast at Parga that belongs, administratively, in a complicated local way to the wider west. Ioannina is inland. Western Macedonia, Thessaly, Western Greece, and Albania. Ipeiros is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Epirus.
The university, tourism in Zagori, and a thin interior. Igoumenitsa is the ferry port and feels like another region. Albanian border trade is ordinary. Albanian prisons are not Greek prisons. People heading for Ioannina still need Ioannina on the list: the lake city, regional capital, and prison town.
Igoumenitsa is the ferry port toward Italy. People heading for Ioannina still need Arta on the list: the southern city of the region, toward the gulf. The administrative centre is Ioannina. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.
Finding someone held in Epirus
Ioannina courts serve the region. The island of the lake is a cafe, not a gate. Ioannina’s prison serves the regional system. National transfers to Domokos, Patras, or Attica are possible. Zagori guesthouses are a poor base unless the institution is confirmed nearby. If a website offers a “full inmate list” for this area, it is not the prison service. Greece does not run custody like a US county jail blotter.
A first arrest in Epirus can be followed by a transfer to another region if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. Greek prisons are a national system. Korydallos in Attica and Domokos in Central Greece are the two names families meet first, and neither is a substitute for the institution written on the order. Official pages change address; verify before travel. Preveza is the airport-and-coast town in the south.
Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact the Greek prison administration, those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.
Visits and family practicalities
Permission in Greek procedure, then a mountain drive. Do not rely on a last bus. The desk compares your document to the approved list letter by letter. If your booking name and your passport diverge — a missing middle name, a transliteration — fix it before you travel to Ioannina. Rules on property, cash, clothing, and how many people may attend are set for each institution and change; copy them from the current official page rather than from a forum post about last year.
Entering via Igoumenitsa from Italy and assuming the port town is the prison town. Ioannina is inland. If you are travelling from abroad, assume the visit is not a same-day add-on to a flight. Approval, the journey from Ioannina, and the time spent at the gate rarely fit between a morning landing and an evening departure. People heading for Ioannina still need Metsovo on the list: the mountain town on the Katara approach, not a gate.
Getting around Epirus
The Egnatia motorway reaches Ioannina from Thessaloniki and from Igoumenitsa. It is the modern fact in an old landscape. No useful rail. The motorway and the airport are the access. Ioannina Airport has domestic links. Athens or Thessaloniki plus the Egnatia is the robust plan.
Pindus snow closes village roads while the motorway stays open. Know which one you need. Save the gate address in Greek as well as English, and carry a paper copy. Rural approaches to institutions are often poorly labelled for visitors who only followed a motorway sign into Ioannina. Albania is the neighbour. Greek custody does not cross that border for convenience.
