Western Macedonia: how this area actually works
Upland basins, cold winters, and the Aliakmon valley. It is the roof of the northern mainland. Central Macedonia, Thessaly, Epirus, and the northern borders. Dytiki Makedonia is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Western Macedonia.
Energy, the university at Kozani and Florina, and a shrinking lignite economy. The region is not a tourist default. Florina’s border life and Kozani’s industry are the two reputations. Neither publishes a roster. People heading for Kozani still need Kozani on the list: the regional capital in the energy basin.
Grevena is the town whose prison is the region’s national custody name. People heading for Kozani still need Florina on the list: the border city in the far north-west. The administrative centre is Kozani. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.
Finding someone held in Western Macedonia
Kozani courts serve the region. Florina, Kastoria, and Grevena are far enough apart to be different days in winter. The prison at Grevena is the institution associated with this region in national reporting. It is not in Kozani’s main square and not in Thessaloniki. Confirm before you choose a base. There is no public roster you can query on the Ministry of Citizen Protection. Placement is an administrative fact, released to the people entitled to it, not a webpage.
A first arrest in Western Macedonia can be followed by a transfer to another region if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. Greek prisons are a national system. Korydallos in Attica and Domokos in Central Greece are the two names families meet first, and neither is a substitute for the institution written on the order. Official pages change address; verify before travel. Kastoria is the lake city west of the basin.
Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact the Greek prison administration, those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.
Visits and family practicalities
Permission, then a mountain drive. Snow is a serious visiting hazard here in a way it is not in Athens. The desk compares your document to the approved list letter by letter. If your booking name and your passport diverge — a missing middle name, a transliteration — fix it before you travel to Kozani. Rules on property, cash, clothing, and how many people may attend are set for each institution and change; copy them from the current official page rather than from a forum post about last year.
Stopping in Thessaloniki because Western Macedonia sounds like a neighbourhood of the north. It is a separate region with its own winter. If you are travelling from abroad, assume the visit is not a same-day add-on to a flight. Approval, the journey from Kozani, and the time spent at the gate rarely fit between a morning landing and an evening departure. People heading for Kozani still need Ptolemaida on the list: the lignite town north of Kozani.
Getting around Western Macedonia
The Egnatia motorway crosses the region and is the lifeline. Off it, upland roads close. Limited. The motorway is the plan. Thessaloniki is the practical airport, then the Egnatia west. Kastoria’s small airport is not the default.
Snow from late autumn. A Thessaloniki forecast will lie to you about Grevena. Save the gate address in Greek as well as English, and carry a paper copy. Rural approaches to institutions are often poorly labelled for visitors who only followed a motorway sign into Kozani.
