Ionian Islands: how this area actually works
Green islands, a Venetian town on Corfu, and a great deal of sea. Each island has its own airport or ferry logic. Epirus and Western Greece are the mainland. Albania lies off Corfu. Ionia Nisia is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Ionian Islands.
Tourism, heavily seasonal. The prison calendar does not follow the charter flights. English and Italian are heard all summer. The file is Greek. Corfu matters here because it is the regional capital and the island prison town.
Put Lefkada in the plan for a concrete reason — a nearby island with a causeway, still not Corfu. Kefalonia matters here because it is a large island to the south, its own journey. The administrative centre is Corfu. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.
Finding someone held in Ionian Islands
Corfu courts serve the island capital. A case on Zakynthos is not automatically a cell on Corfu. Corfu’s prison is the local institution. Mainland transfers are common for longer custody. Do not island-hop looking for the person. The Greek prison administration does not publish a searchable inmate index. Guessing from news headlines or a shared surname will send you to the wrong gate.
A first arrest in Ionian Islands can be followed by a transfer to another region if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. Greek prisons are a national system. Korydallos in Attica and Domokos in Central Greece are the two names families meet first, and neither is a substitute for the institution written on the order. Official pages change address; verify before travel. Put Zakynthos in the plan for a concrete reason — the southern island, a different airport.
Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact the Greek prison administration, those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.
Visits and family practicalities
Permission first. Then one island. A multi-island ticket is a holiday, not a search method. Children do not bypass identification rules. Check the age and accompaniment conditions on the official page for the specific institution, because they are not uniform across Ionian Islands. Rules on property, cash, clothing, and how many people may attend are set for each institution and change; copy them from the current official page rather than from a forum post about last year.
Landing on Zakynthos or Kefalonia because the fare was to “the Ionian”, when the institution is on Corfu or has moved to Patras or Athens. If you are travelling from abroad, assume the visit is not a same-day add-on to a flight. Approval, the journey from Corfu, and the time spent at the gate rarely fit between a morning landing and an evening departure. Argostoli matters here because it is Kefalonia’s town, not a Corfu suburb.
Getting around Ionian Islands
On Corfu the coast road is slow in summer. Between islands there is no road. None. Corfu Airport for Corfu. Each other island’s airport is a different decision. Mainland Aktion or Athens may be saner if the person is no longer on an island.
April to October is crowded. Winter ferries thin out. Match the season to the institution, not to the beach. Save the gate address in Greek as well as English, and carry a paper copy. Rural approaches to institutions are often poorly labelled for visitors who only followed a motorway sign into Corfu.
