Gozo Region: how this area actually works
A limestone island of villages, cliffs, and the channel from Ċirkewwa. Comino sits in the strait. The sea is the real border. The Northern Region of the main island is the ferry partner. Nothing else is adjacent. Reġjun Għawdex is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Gozo Region.
Tourism, administration in Victoria, and a slower calendar than Malta proper. The ferry is the economy’s hinge. Gozo is not a separate state. Courts and prisons belong to the Republic of Malta. Victoria is the island town, also called Rabat, and the regional centre.
People heading for Victoria still need Mġarr on the list: Gozo’s ferry harbour, not the Mġarr on the main island. Xagħra is an inland village near the Ġgantija temples. The administrative centre is Victoria. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.
Finding someone held in Gozo Region
Gozo has a court presence in Victoria for local matters. Serious custody is still a national question answered at Corradino. Corradino at Paola, on the main island’s Southern Region, is the prison. A person arrested in Gozo is not held in the Citadel. You will need the ferry and a confirmed visit, in that order of importance and the reverse order of booking. Name-search sites that scrape court journalism are not the Correctional Services Agency. They miss transfers and they invent certainty. Use the official channel.
A first arrest in Gozo Region can be followed by a transfer to another region if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. Malta’s regions are local-government groupings from 2022, not prison districts. The country has one main prison, Corradino at Paola, in the Southern Region. People heading for Victoria still need Nadur on the list: an eastern hill village.
Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact the Correctional Services Agency, those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.
Visits and family practicalities
Arrange the visit with the Correctional Services Agency before you trust a ferry time. Missed ferries in wind are common. Missed slots are final. Bring a passport or national ID that matches the visitor approval exactly. A photo on a phone is not an identity document at a prison in Gozo Region. Rules on property, cash, clothing, and how many people may attend are set for each institution and change; copy them from the current official page rather than from a forum post about last year.
Booking a farmhouse in Gozo for a visit week without checking that the gate is in Paola and the last ferry back is early. If you are travelling from abroad, assume the visit is not a same-day add-on to a flight. Approval, the journey from Victoria, and the time spent at the gate rarely fit between a morning landing and an evening departure. Comino is the small island in the channel, uninhabited for practical visit purposes.
Getting around Gozo Region
Gozo’s roads are short and village-slow. The real road is the channel crossing to Ċirkewwa, then the drive down Malta to Paola. None. Ferry, bus, and taxi. Malta International Airport, then a northbound trip to the ferry, or a helicopter service that is not a visiting plan. The airport is on the main island.
Winter gales cancel ferries. August fills them. Either can destroy a same-day return from Corradino. Save the gate address in Maltese as well as English, and carry a paper copy. Rural approaches to institutions are often poorly labelled for visitors who only followed a motorway sign into Victoria.
