Northern Region: how this area actually works
The northern bays, the Mellieħa ridge, and Mosta’s dome inland. The land narrows toward Ċirkewwa. Central, Eastern, and the Gozo ferry. The Southern Region is a drive down the island. Reġjun Tramuntana is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Northern Region.
Tourism in the bays, year-round towns at Mosta and Naxxar, and summer populations that dwarf the winter ones. English is widespread in the resorts and does not create a prison roster. People heading for St Paul's Bay still need St Paul's Bay on the list: the largest northern bay town and a summer city.
Mosta is the inland dome town and a major population centre. People heading for St Paul's Bay still need Mellieħa on the list: the ridge town above the northern beaches and the Gozo road. The administrative centre is St Paul's Bay. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.
Finding someone held in Northern Region
National courts are in Valletta. A police matter in Mellieħa is not heard on the beach. The prison is Corradino at Paola in the Southern Region. Northern arrests travel there. A resort apartment in St Paul’s Bay is a long way, in Maltese terms, from the gate. If a website offers a “full inmate list” for this area, it is not the prison service. Malta does not run custody like a US county jail blotter.
A first arrest in Northern Region can be followed by a transfer to another region if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. Malta’s regions are local-government groupings from 2022, not prison districts. The country has one main prison, Corradino at Paola, in the Southern Region. Naxxar is an inland town on the ridge beside Mosta.
Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact the Correctional Services Agency, those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.
Visits and family practicalities
Book the visit first. Then decide whether a northern hotel is worth the extra road, which it often is not on a tight morning. The desk compares your document to the approved list letter by letter. If your booking name and your passport diverge — a missing middle name, a transliteration — fix it before you travel to St Paul's Bay. Rules on property, cash, clothing, and how many people may attend are set for each institution and change; copy them from the current official page rather than from a forum post about last year.
Staying in Mellieħa because the ferry or the airport bus seemed convenient, and underestimating morning traffic toward Paola. If you are travelling from abroad, assume the visit is not a same-day add-on to a flight. Approval, the journey from St Paul's Bay, and the time spent at the gate rarely fit between a morning landing and an evening departure. People heading for St Paul's Bay still need Mġarr on the list: the main-island village, not Gozo’s ferry harbour of the same name.
Getting around Northern Region
The northern trunk road jams in summer between St Paul’s Bay and the centre. Paola is beyond that jam. No railway. Buses run, and they are not a timed visiting service. The airport is southern, at Luqa. Landing and driving north, then having to drive south again to Corradino, is a common wasted triangle.
June to September the bays own the roads. A winter visit is easier to time and still needs approval. Save the gate address in Maltese as well as English, and carry a paper copy. Rural approaches to institutions are often poorly labelled for visitors who only followed a motorway sign into St Paul's Bay.
