Southern Region: how this area actually works
The Grand Harbour’s southern shore, the Three Cities and Paola on the ridge, the airport plain, and the bays toward Birżebbuġa. The land is denser than visitors expect. The Port Region is across and around the harbour. The airport sits in this southern half of the island. Reġjun Nofsinhar is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Southern Region.
The airport, the docks, industry, and large residential towns. Paola is a working town under the prison hill, not a resort. Maltese is the street language; English is official. The prison’s rules are the Agency’s, in both, and they are not optional. People heading for Paola still need Paola on the list: the town of Corradino hill and the practical centre for a visit.
Corradino is the prison hill itself, not a separate resort. People heading for Paola still need Luqa on the list: the airport locality. The administrative centre is Paola. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.
Finding someone held in Southern Region
Hearings are generally in Valletta. The person, if held, is here. Families who only learn the courthouse routine miss the hill. Corradino is Malta’s main prison, for men and women, under the Correctional Services Agency. There is no second public prison to guess. There is also no public inmate list on a government website. If a website offers a “full inmate list” for this area, it is not the prison service. Malta does not run custody like a US county jail blotter.
A first arrest in Southern Region can be followed by a transfer to another region if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. Malta’s regions are local-government groupings from 2022, not prison districts. The country has one main prison, Corradino at Paola, in the Southern Region. Birżebbuġa is the southern bay town toward the freeport.
Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact the Correctional Services Agency, those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.
Visits and family practicalities
Visits are booked with the Agency before you fly. Bring the identity document that matches the approval, and come to Paola, not to the airport hotel, at the stated time. Children do not bypass identification rules. Check the age and accompaniment conditions on the official page for the specific institution, because they are not uniform across Southern Region. Rules on property, cash, clothing, and how many people may attend are set for each institution and change; copy them from the current official page rather than from a forum post about last year.
Going to Valletta, to a police station, or to the airport because the region is small and “someone will know”. The gate is Corradino’s. If you are travelling from abroad, assume the visit is not a same-day add-on to a flight. Approval, the journey from Paola, and the time spent at the gate rarely fit between a morning landing and an evening departure. People heading for Paola still need Żurrieq on the list: an inland southern village on the way to the Blue Grotto coast.
Getting around Southern Region
The southern roads from the airport to Paola are short and, at peaks, slow. Learn the hill approach rather than the seafront. No railway. Buses from Valletta to Paola are frequent by Maltese standards and still not an excuse to be late. Malta International Airport at Luqa is in this southern part of the island. Landing there is the closest a flight can get, and it is not admission.
Summer heat on an exposed hill and winter rain on the same limestone. The season does not change the approval. Save the gate address in Maltese as well as English, and carry a paper copy.
