Greater Poland: Poznań custody, visits and travel

Greater Poland is the west-central voivodeship seated in Poznań, with Kalisz, Konin, Leszno and Gniezno spread across a flat map that drives longer than it looks. Służba Więzienna holds remand in areszty and sentences in zakłady karne, and it publishes no names. A Poznań case is not a Warsaw case unless the letter says so. The city’s trade-fair calendar is not a visiting calendar. Ask which establishment, then which town.

Greater Poland: how this area actually works

Poznań is the court and rail capital. Gniezno is a short hop and still another town. Kalisz is a different direction. The voivodeship office cannot confirm a detainee. sw.gov.pl is the service. A German family driving from the border should still expect Polish rules, not a Brandenburg prison procedure. The border is not in this voivodeship’s capital. Lubusz lies to the west.

Papers name the unit. Do not promote a search pin called “Poznań prison” into an address without the letter. If the person is in Masovia, use Warsaw’s named areszt. If the person is in Lubusz, Gorzów or Zielona Góra is another region. If the person is in Lower Silesia, that is Wrocław. Remand and sentenced regimes differ. Women’s placement is whatever the papers say. Greater Poland is large. The old town is not the gate. Gniezno, Kalisz, Konin and Leszno are not Poznań fairgrounds. If the unit is in one of them, move the hotel before fair week prices lock you into the wrong city.

Fair weeks fill every hotel. That has nothing to do with whether a widzenia is approved. Probation in Poznań is not a cell. If the person has been moved, cancel the fair-week logic. Recheck. Families arrive for a trade event and add a prison visit that was never confirmed, then miss both. Poznań’s fair weeks are not visiting weeks. If the unit is in Kalisz, Konin, Leszno or Gniezno, the fair hotel is the wrong city even when the train back looks easy.

Finding someone held in Greater Poland

Confirm through the lawyer or the SW route. Poznań police will not read a list. Bring the date of birth and case number. Embassies need the establishment. A news item from Konin or Leszno goes stale after a transfer out of the voivodeship.

Write the unit and the town. Foreign visitors should match Poznań Airport to a confirmed local gate, or skip it. If the person is in West Pomerania, Szczecin is north. If the person is in Łódź’s voivodeship, that is east. Greater Poland is not a compromise base for all of western Poland. Lubusz lies west, with two capitals of its own. Lower Silesia lies south. West Pomerania lies north. Greater Poland is not a base for all three.

Visits and family practicalities

Book widzenia for the named unit. No hours are printed here. Check the live page. A Warsaw or Wrocław timetable is the wrong document.

Bring a passport if you are foreign. Children need permission and consent. Polish is the working language. Ask for an interpreter. Read the property sheet. Fair-week luggage is not visiting-room luggage. A Warsaw morning and a Poznań afternoon are a corridor people overrate. Add identification time, or split the days.

Getting around Greater Poland

Poznań Airport and the main station are the arrivals. Regional trains serve Gniezno, Leszno and the Kalisz direction on different lines. Use SW’s directions. A pin on the old market is not the entrance. Give the driver the full name of the establishment.

Add identification time. Fair traffic and a same-day Warsaw connection both fail tight slots. Stay in the establishment’s town. If the person is not in this voivodeship, do not remain in Poznań because the trains are good. Good trains go to the right city only when you choose it. Say Wielkopolska if a Polish speaker is booking the taxi, and say the establishment’s full name. “Poznań prison” is how cars stop at the old market.

Questions families actually ask

Is Greater Poland the same as the city of Poznań?
Poznań is the capital. The voivodeship is larger. The establishment may be in another town, or in another voivodeship entirely.
Does a Poznań case stay in Poznań?
Not necessarily. Remand may be local and a sentence may be served elsewhere. Confirm the current unit.
Is there a public list?
No. Służba Więzienna does not publish names.

Other Voivodeships in Poland

voivodeship · KielceHoly CrossWojewództwo świętokrzyskieHoly Cross is the small central voivodeship seated in Kielce, between Masovia, Łódź, Lesser Poland and Silesia. The mountains of the same name are not a prison. Służba Więzienna does not publish names. Families skip the region because the neighbours are more famous, then miss a Kielce gate, or they book Kielce because the person was born there while the letter already says Kraków or Warsaw. Ask the establishment.Open this area →voivodeship · Bydgoszcz and ToruńKuyavia-PomeraniaWojewództwo kujawsko-pomorskieKuyavia-Pomerania is the voivodeship with two capitals, Bydgoszcz and Toruń, on the Vistula and the Brda. That constitutional oddity is the visiting hazard. Służba Więzienna does not publish names. A family that books Toruń’s old town because it is famous, while the establishment is in Bydgoszcz, misses the slot. A family that does the reverse misses it the other way. Ask which city, then which unit. Neither city is Gdańsk, and neither is Warsaw.Open this area →voivodeship · KrakówLesser PolandWojewództwo małopolskieLesser Poland is the southern voivodeship seated in Kraków, with Tarnów, Nowy Sącz and the mountain districts toward Zakopane. Areszt Śledczy Kraków serves Małopolska courts. It is not a Warsaw prison and not a tourist office under Wawel. Służba Więzienna runs it and does not publish names. A family that flies to Kraków because the person lived there may find them still in a Warsaw areszt, or may find them here while the family waits in Warsaw. The letter chooses.Open this area →voivodeship · ŁódźŁódźWojewództwo łódzkieThe Łódź voivodeship is seated in the city of Łódź, between Warsaw and the west, with Piotrków Trybunalski, Skierniewice and Sieradz on the map. It is not Masovia, even though Skierniewice feels like a commuter town and Warsaw is close by Polish standards. Służba Więzienna does not publish names. A family that stays in Warsaw because the train is short may be late for a gate in Łódź, and a family that stays in Łódź may be ignoring a Białołęka letter.Open this area →voivodeship · WrocławLower SilesiaWojewództwo dolnośląskieLower Silesia is the southwestern voivodeship seated in Wrocław, with Wałbrzych, Legnica and Jelenia Góra toward the mountains and the German border. Służba Więzienna holds people in areszty and zakłady karne and does not publish names. A Wrocław arrest is not a promise of a Wrocław sentence, and it is not a Warsaw remand unless the letter says so. The city’s islands and bridges are not a map of gates.Open this area →voivodeship · LublinLublinWojewództwo lubelskieLublin is the eastern voivodeship, seated in the city of Lublin, with Zamość, Chełm, Biała Podlaska and Puławy toward the Bug. It is not Lubusz, the western border region with a similar Latin spelling. Służba Więzienna does not publish names. A family that books a flight to the German border has crossed Poland in the wrong direction. Ask the establishment, then the city, and keep the east in the subject line.Open this area →voivodeship · Gorzów Wielkopolski and Zielona GóraLubuszWojewództwo lubuskieLubusz is the border voivodeship with two capitals, Gorzów Wielkopolski and Zielona Góra. The German frontier is daily life and not a shared prison system. Służba Więzienna does not publish names. A family that asks in Frankfurt an der Oder or in Berlin will not be given a Polish roster. A family that books the wrong Polish capital, because the region has two, misses the gate inside Poland. Ask the city first.Open this area →voivodeship · WarsawMasoviaWojewództwo mazowieckieMasovia is the voivodeship around Warsaw, and the capital’s prisons are not one address. Areszt Śledczy Warszawa-Białołęka, on the right bank, is the modern remand house. Areszt Śledczy Warszawa-Mokotów, on ul. Rakowiecka, is the historic name Poles still use for “the Warsaw prison.” Służba Więzienna, the Prison Service, runs both. It does not publish a list of names. A family that picks the site they remember from television, instead of the site on the letter, loses the day in the wrong district.Open this area →voivodeship · OpoleOpoleWojewództwo opolskieOpole is the small southwestern voivodeship between Lower Silesia and Silesia, seated in the city of Opole. It is not Katowice and not Wrocław, though both are close enough to cause wrong airports. Służba Więzienna does not publish names. A local case may be held here or moved to a larger region’s zakład karny after classification. Ask before you pick the airport by fame.Open this area →voivodeship · BiałystokPodlaskieWojewództwo podlaskiePodlaskie is the northeastern voivodeship, seated in Białystok, with Suwałki, Łomża and the border country toward Lithuania and Belarus. Służba Więzienna does not publish names. A Warsaw booking is the usual error, because Masovia is closer on a tired map than it is on the day. Neighbouring countries’ police will not read a Polish roster. Ask the establishment before you choose the forest or the capital.Open this area →voivodeship · GdańskPomeraniaWojewództwo pomorskiePomerania is the Baltic voivodeship of Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot, the Tri-City, plus Słupsk and the Kashubian towns inland. It is not West Pomerania, whose capital is Szczecin. Służba Więzienna does not publish names. A family that books a waterfront hotel in Sopot and assumes the gate is on the same promenade is using a postcard. Ask which city holds the establishment, and whether the person is still in this voivodeship at all.Open this area →voivodeship · KatowiceSilesiaWojewództwo śląskieSilesia, in the Polish name the Śląskie voivodeship, is the dense south, seated in Katowice, with Gliwice, Zabrze, Sosnowiec, Bielsko-Biała and Częstochowa inside one administrative region that is not one city. Służba Więzienna does not publish names. A family that says “Silesia” and means Wrocław has the wrong voivodeship. A family that says “Katowice” and means a unit in Gliwice or Częstochowa has the wrong town. Ask for the establishment.Open this area →
