Lower Silesia: Wrocław custody, visits and travel

Lower Silesia is the southwestern voivodeship seated in Wrocław, with Wałbrzych, Legnica and Jelenia Góra toward the mountains and the German border. Służba Więzienna holds people in areszty and zakłady karne and does not publish names. A Wrocław arrest is not a promise of a Wrocław sentence, and it is not a Warsaw remand unless the letter says so. The city’s islands and bridges are not a map of gates.

Lower Silesia: how this area actually works

Wrocław is the court and rail capital. The other cities are real distances, especially toward the Karkonosze. Appeals and first-instance hearings may not share a building with any prison. The voivodeship office cannot confirm a detainee. sw.gov.pl is the service. A German police station across the border cannot read you a Polish list. Border shopping in Görlitz’s direction is not a clue.

Papers name an establishment. It may be an areszt śledczy for remand or a zakład karny for a sentence, in this voivodeship or elsewhere after classification. Do not invent one “Wrocław prison” from a search pin. If the letter names Warsaw’s Białołęka or Rakowiecka, use the Masovia page. If it names a Silesian unit in Katowice’s region, that is a different voivodeship. Upper Silesia and Lower Silesia are not one industrial blur.

The Odra floods the city’s imagery and not the visiting rules. Probation in Wrocław is not a cell. If the person has been moved, recast the hotel. Recheck. Mountain weekends in Jelenia Góra are unrelated to whether a widzenia exists. Families combine them and keep only the weekend. Wrocław’s islands are a walking city, not a prison map. The establishment’s district may be a tram and a walk the official directions already describe. Use those, not a pin on the market hall.

Finding someone held in Lower Silesia

Confirm through the lawyer or the SW route. Wrocław police will not read a list. Bring the date of birth and case number. Embassies need Poland and the establishment, not “Silesia” as a single word. A news item from Wałbrzych goes stale after a transfer.

Write the establishment and the city. Foreign visitors should separate Wrocław from Katowice and from Warsaw before they choose an airport. If the person is in Lubusz, the border voivodeship to the north, that is another page. Lower Silesia is the right trip only when the papers say so. Wałbrzych, Legnica and Jelenia Góra are not evening strolls from the cathedral. If the unit is in one of them, sleep there. If the unit is in Katowice’s voivodeship, you want Silesia, not Lower Silesia.

Visits and family practicalities

Book widzenia for the named unit. No hours are printed here. Remand and sentenced regimes differ. Check the live SW page. A Warsaw timetable will not open a Wrocław door.

Bring a passport if you are foreign. Children need permission and consent. Polish is the working language. Ask for an interpreter. German, common in family histories here, does not replace that request. Read the property sheet. Pack for the unit, not for a market square weekend. Fair and festival weekends fill Wrocław beds. Book after the unit is known, and add identification time that the old town’s charm will not shrink.

Getting around Lower Silesia

Wrocław Airport and the main station are the arrivals. Trains run to the mountain towns and toward Poznań and Kraków. Use SW’s directions. A pin on the market hall or the cathedral island is not the entrance. Give the driver the full establishment name.

Add identification time. A same-day hope that links a mountain hotel and a city gate usually fails. Stay in the establishment’s town. If the person is in another voivodeship, leave Lower Silesia. The border does not make the prison German. German border towns will not confirm a Polish placement. Cross back into the correct Polish city before you call the day a near miss.

Questions families actually ask

Is Lower Silesia the same as Silesia?
Silesia, seated in Katowice, is a different voivodeship. Lower Silesia is Wrocław’s. Do not merge them when you book the visit.
Can German authorities confirm a Wrocław prisoner?
No. Placement is Polish, through Służba Więzienna or the lawyer.
Does Wrocław publish an inmate list?
No. There is no public SW roster.

Other Voivodeships in Poland

voivodeship · PoznańGreater PolandWojewództwo wielkopolskieGreater Poland is the west-central voivodeship seated in Poznań, with Kalisz, Konin, Leszno and Gniezno spread across a flat map that drives longer than it looks. Służba Więzienna holds remand in areszty and sentences in zakłady karne, and it publishes no names. A Poznań case is not a Warsaw case unless the letter says so. The city’s trade-fair calendar is not a visiting calendar. Ask which establishment, then which town.Open this area →voivodeship · KielceHoly CrossWojewództwo świętokrzyskieHoly Cross is the small central voivodeship seated in Kielce, between Masovia, Łódź, Lesser Poland and Silesia. The mountains of the same name are not a prison. Służba Więzienna does not publish names. Families skip the region because the neighbours are more famous, then miss a Kielce gate, or they book Kielce because the person was born there while the letter already says Kraków or Warsaw. Ask the establishment.Open this area →voivodeship · Bydgoszcz and ToruńKuyavia-PomeraniaWojewództwo kujawsko-pomorskieKuyavia-Pomerania is the voivodeship with two capitals, Bydgoszcz and Toruń, on the Vistula and the Brda. That constitutional oddity is the visiting hazard. Służba Więzienna does not publish names. A family that books Toruń’s old town because it is famous, while the establishment is in Bydgoszcz, misses the slot. A family that does the reverse misses it the other way. Ask which city, then which unit. Neither city is Gdańsk, and neither is Warsaw.Open this area →voivodeship · KrakówLesser PolandWojewództwo małopolskieLesser Poland is the southern voivodeship seated in Kraków, with Tarnów, Nowy Sącz and the mountain districts toward Zakopane. The letter chooses.Open this area →voivodeship · ŁódźŁódźWojewództwo łódzkieThe Łódź voivodeship is seated in the city of Łódź, between Warsaw and the west, with Piotrków Trybunalski, Skierniewice and Sieradz on the map. It is not Masovia, even though Skierniewice feels like a commuter town and Warsaw is close by Polish standards. Służba Więzienna does not publish names. A family that stays in Warsaw because the train is short may be late for a gate in Łódź, and a family that stays in Łódź may be ignoring a Białołęka letter.Open this area →voivodeship · LublinLublinWojewództwo lubelskieLublin is the eastern voivodeship, seated in the city of Lublin, with Zamość, Chełm, Biała Podlaska and Puławy toward the Bug. It is not Lubusz, the western border region with a similar Latin spelling. Służba Więzienna does not publish names. A family that books a flight to the German border has crossed Poland in the wrong direction. The German frontier is daily life and not a shared prison system. Służba Więzienna does not publish names. A family that asks in Frankfurt an der Oder or in Berlin will not be given a Polish roster. A family that books the wrong Polish capital, because the region has two, misses the gate inside Poland. Ask the city first.Open this area →voivodeship · WarsawMasoviaWojewództwo mazowieckieMasovia is the voivodeship around Warsaw, and the capital’s prisons are not one address. Areszt Śledczy Warszawa-Białołęka, on the right bank, is the modern remand house. Areszt Śledczy Warszawa-Mokotów, on ul. Rakowiecka, is the historic name Poles still use for “the Warsaw prison.” Służba Więzienna, the Prison Service, runs both. It does not publish a list of names. A family that picks the site they remember from television, instead of the site on the letter, loses the day in the wrong district.Open this area →voivodeship · OpoleOpoleWojewództwo opolskieOpole is the small southwestern voivodeship between Lower Silesia and Silesia, seated in the city of Opole. It is not Katowice and not Wrocław, though both are close enough to cause wrong airports. Służba Więzienna does not publish names.
